Multi-Shaft Efficiency Comparison

10/05/2012 11:45 AM

I have seen that in combined cycle, 2 on 1 multi shaft configuration (2 GT-1ST) has slight better efficiency than 2 single shaft configuration(2 GT-2ST). As I have studied, it is because one large ST has better efficiency than two small ST, but I am not quite sure why one large ST can have better efficiency since steam flow and temperature to ST inlet seem to be the same between two configurations. For example, in 800 MW plant, 2 on 1 multi shaft combined cycle has 0.3 % better efficiency than 2 single shaft. Could anyone let me know the reason for that?

I am curious to know as to how this figure of "0.3 % better efficiency" was arrived at?

Acutaully, what percentage is better really depends on which model is used. For example, I have seen 0.3% in MHI combined cycle, but others may have different value.

Less friction for the single shaft?

Sorry- I meant less friction overall in the single turbine?
