Requirement for a PE Stamp

10/07/2012 5:19 PM

In the State of Illinois is a PE stamp required on a piece of equipment designed, constructed and used internally within the company that employs the design engineer? If a piece of equipment is purchased as a unit, does the purchaser need to stamp the drawings or is the stamp by the supplier that designed and constructed the equipment sufficient?

This is not definitive to your case for I know little of Illinois requirements. Most states grandfathered the title for in-house equipment; say the design of a vessel used in production, but not part of the product. The big chemical companies had them but the poor guys had to scramble to get a license when they were downsized late in their careers.

In Canada, an engineer cannot stamp somebody else's design unless that person worked under the engineer's supervision and that he verify and influence the resulting design. Here, we cannot rubber stamp a design. There are no difference if the design is to be used in house or be sold. A lethal accident is not acceptable whether it is at your plant or at your customer's.

Basically, if you didn't design it, you cannot stamp it.

But, you can stamp with the mention that you revised the design. It has no real legal weight. It is only an internal process for some plants to insure that everybody agrees with the design.

It seems that some American States accept this as a valid endorsement. As another poster wrote above, ask the local authority for the legal answer applicable to your case.

WTF??? I went to post a long response to this query and it went **POOF**!!!!!

This is happening more and more often this last week!

MODERATORS??????????

Anyhow, I will not re-write it!

I believe you cannot just "rubber stamp" someone elses' design. You must thoroughly review the: (1) Calculations perform for the design, (2) review the acceptability of materials used to manufacturer the product, (3) review the manufacturing techniques, and, (4) assure yourself that it is a safe design and will not harm persons nor destroy or impinge upon property so affected by it's utilization.

IF you affix a PE stamp to a drawing by others, you must denote on said drawings that you have reviewed the design and assured yourself of it's safe design etc. You muse also sign and date the drawing in the manner that is acceptable and prescribed by the Illinois State Board for Professional Engineering (or whatever it is called).

Since I am not Licensed and Registered as a PE in Illinois, I would first verify this with the Board and the applicable state statutes if you can even do this.....

Most likely an out of state PE (not holding a IL PE License and current/valid Registration) will not satisfy the Illinois laws nor the State Education Dept/Board for Professional Engineering.

Is this piece of equipment Mechanical in nature and requires a ME PE stamp?

I guess my question was confusing. I am not and would never dream of affixing a stamp to someone else's work. My question is, I am purchasing piece of mechanical equipment manufactured by someone else who has a stamp. If I have done my due deligence using Process Safety Management to determine the applicability, do I need a stamp other than the one supplied by the manufacturer?

At the very least, verify/validate the other person. The stamp could be counterfeit, and you may be liable for any damages due to this equipment and/or what is produced by this equipment. Is this a valid stamp and is the person using it the one to whom it was issued?
