I was told once by my mentor that "Tumbs are for sucking".

Oh! Yes! Any engineering sizing shall not be based on thumb rules; one has to do a precise calculation.

How can a "detailed" calculation be "precise"?

Suggest you attend to a structured training programme on Switchboard Design.

i need to find out the copper bus bar for 400 Sqmm Al cable termination? actually i am bit confused between current density of copper ie.. 1.6 Amp/Sqmm or 1.2 Amp/Sqmm ?

I have developed APP for " Busbar design for Switch boards & Busducts" which will work on Iphones and Ipads.This is under verification with Itunes before release and this may be available in APPS store shortly.

Briefly this application will give you Current rating for a particular cross section of busbar (Aluminum or Copper )after deration due to temperature,enclosure size and enclosure material.This application has been developed taking reference from books like 'Aluminum Busbars' by Thomas and Rata and Copper Development Authority,London. and personal experience. I hope this will be useful to Electrical Engineers.
