Manual Electric Start Standby Diesel Generator

10/09/2012 5:57 AM

I HAVE A NEILSEN CT 0012 BDE6700T3 THREE PHASE DIESEL GENERATOR,WHICH IS A MANUAL ELECTRIC START.I WANT TO USE THE GENERATOR WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH (ATS). I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IN ORDER TO DO THAT IT HAS TO BE CONVERTED FROM MANUAL ELECTRIC START TO AUTO ELECTRIC START,AND THIS IS ALL TO DO WITH THE GENERATOR IGNITION KEY.APPARENTLY THE KEY SWITCH HAS THREE WIRES, BATTERY POSITIVE WIRE, FUEL WIRE, AND STARTER WIRE AND THESE WIRES HAVE TO BE RECONNECTED TO THE CONTROL MODULE. I NEED TO KNOW HOW THIS IS DONE TECHNICALLY. I LIVE IN LONDON AND THIS GENERATOR IS GOING TO BE USED IN MY HOLIDAY HOME IN GHANA WHERE THE UTILITY SUPPLY IS DISRUPTIVE MOST OF THE TIME.

  1. Turn off Caps Lock.
  2. Talk to Neilsen.

There will need to be a relay that is held open while utility power is there. As soon as the power is interrupted, the relay will close supplying power to the starter, and the fuel solenoid. As the oil pressure builds, there will need to be a pressure switch that will interrupt the power to the starter. That way the engine will crank until oil pressure reaches the desired amount, then the engine will run on its own. When utility power returns, the relay will open again, shutting off the fuel supply.
