220 Electrical Power

10/09/2012 11:59 AM

I am running three phase 220-240 on my machines. I have a new machine that calls for 208 single phase. Is there a way to get 208 single from 220 three phase???? Thanks

Yes. There are several.

Just connect between two phases, there's no need to spend money on an inverter. The slight voltage difference is well within limits.

Will that drop the voltage if i use only the two. Voltage is what it is right???

No, 220 - 240 volt (the phase-phase voltage of your supply) is a bit higher than the nominal rating of your new machine. But it should be OK, TonyS says.

You have 220V between the phases. Your machine requires 208V. Normal tolerance (UK) would be +/- 10% so 208+10%=228V.

You're M/C will be fine without an inverter.

You might need to be careful that the neutral on your 1-phase appliance is not connected to earth (ground if you're American ). It shouldn't be, but it doesn't matter if it is on 1-phase supply, as the neutral is then the neutral of a 3-phase supply. If it is you will have a short circuit when you connect a phase to the neutral terminal.

Check the resistance between neutral and earth terminals on the appliance. If it's not very high (megohms) you have a problem.
