How Do I Get the New Lion Upgrade for Macpro?

10/11/2012 6:16 AM

I just got a new MacPro from the Apple store but it came with Snow Leopard instead of Lion. Is it possible for me to get a free upgrade? And if so how?

Wow, was it a refurbished unit?

You can call Apple technical support and give them your serial number.

You can also try going online to the Apple App Store and see if the upgrade is free. They build in some smarts to the web site that reads your machine's serial number, model, etc. and it may let you upgrade for free. If they want to charge you, then simply abort. You may need to sign up and get an Apple ID first.

They ask you to join the Cloud, but you do not need to.

Are you sure it was an Apple store? When you say new, do you mean new to you?

It simply isn't plausible for you to have gotten a new, meaning the current latest version with Snow Leopard on it. It has to be a refurbished model or an older model that has been setting there a while. Worst case it should only be a nominal fee for the OS, not like Windows.

Must be a refurbished Mac. I think they do not normally update the OS, but I think that he may be eligible.

The other issue is compatibility. The Mac Pro must be a 64-bit machine to run 10.8 OS X.

It most likely is. I have one from 2007 and it will.

Great. I just checked out the Apple Store online for refurbished Mac Pros and all of them are listed as Mountain Lion Eligible.

The key word is eligible, which tells me that they have an earlier OS and a free upgrade is possible. TomHarry should call Apple Support and they will tell him how to proceed.

There probably is some paperwork that came with the Mac Pro that should tell him as well.

You tell here that Mac Pro must be a 64-bit machine to run 10.8 OS X but if Mac pro is of 32-bit then any other solution for it??

No. But I believe all Mac Pros were 64 bit.

I think all Mac Pros were 64-bits after reading some of the history on the product introduced in 2006.

However, the older ones may need a graphics card upgrade to run Mountain Lion. That is pretty simple to do, but if you are not satisfied with that idea, then probably the better bet is to sell it and buy a newer machine.

  1. Run Apple Hardware Test
  2. If no hardware prob (could be bad RAM), reinstall the OS

If still no joy, take it to Genius Bar and get a replacement
