How Should I Latch My Contactor Coil Via Momentary Switches?

10/21/2012 10:55 PM

how should I latch my contactor via momentary switch? Hey I have(4) 240V 5,000Watt heaters that I intended to control with a single gang L.V. switch made by leviton mod lvs-8w the switch is a 8 button momentary switch.I was intending to power switch with step down trans 120-12/24v which would in turn operate 8 individual Dp contactors with a 12 volt coil. I wanted 8 separate contactors to have the flexibility to control each of the 2 elements in each heater separately.I know a latching relay might be in order but my concern is push button switch only having 8 buttons or zones. can this be done without spending a fortune? should I be spending time building this or is there product available to do all this packaged. thanks

By wiring up a set/reset relay logic. It will be easier having NO and NC contacts for your push buttons.

You also should include some circuit protection and some status indicators. If you cannot figure this out from this, call an electrician. The life you save maybe from your own family.

The answers shown are standard mag starter switches, come on the box with a starter inside. Inside the cover are instructions for more elaborate setups.

2 & 3 are good answers. But for your 8 zones, you would need 8 NO and 8 NC switches.

Are NO and NC switches available in momentary contact for 2500 watts? Seems like a lot of watts for a switch. Maybe a row of mag starters will be needed.

Both 2 & 3 utilize a contactor (mag starter) with an auxiliary contact to seal in the contactor. They only show the control circuit - the contactor would also have power contacts rated for the heater load. So, yes, 8 contactors would also be required.

A lot of relays - probably a bit of an expensive solution:

Relay A is just to give the extra N/O and N/C contacts.

Relay B is your actual Set / Reset - if you use a relay with 3 N/O contacts

if all only 2 N/O and 2 N/C contacts, can use Relay C - allthough it switches only when the button is released again...

Why off topic?

If you're looking for a hardwired solution and 'B' is your contactor - you have a set/reset: push to switch on / push again to switch off...

Purchase a small PLC unit with the appropriate number of inputs and outputs to perform the logic you want, program it accordingly, and perfect the operation through "trial and error".

It is much easier to execute the relay control logic with a PLC program and there is much less hardwiring required than in using relay/relay logic.

Siemens, Allen Bradley, Schneider, GE, ABB are but a few of the manufacturers that offer these compact, self-contained units.

The is a large selection of "used" PLC units available online at very modest pricing.

That's what I was gonna say, but I'm too old to know what PLC units are. New fangled stuff that I've heard of, but it sounds like what he needs.

Purchasing a PLC can give the op trouble. First, you have to know the ladder logic. Then the contacts inside the PLC are not capable of handling that kind of amperage. You still have to incorporate relays to keep the current from the heaters from cooking the PLC. Using the correct size relay instead of contactor or PLC would be preferable.
