The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded a multi-million dollar contract for work on "Walrus", a military airship that planners hope will be better than zeppelins or hot-air balloons. "In distinct contrast to earlier-generation airships, the Walrus aircraft will be a heavier-than-air vehicle and will generate lift through a combination of aerodynamics, thrust vectoring and gas- buoyancy generation and management," DARPA said in a statement announcing awards to Lockheed Martin and Aeros Aeronautical Systems Corp.
