Reusing SMD-s from junk PCB-s

10/31/2012 12:17 PM

i've collected a lot of SMD discreets - mostly from blown UPS-es - identifying the transistors is difficult S-pecially if there's no marking of any kind on 'em

here's some resouce on that ...

! there's a website for http://www.s-manuals.com/smd

SMD readyly identified

2T1 pnp 500mA 300mW 25V 150MHz
5Bp pnp 500mA 200mW 45V 80MHz !1.0A !250nW * it might withstand 250mW OP
67 npn 50mA 200mW 10V 7.5GHz

J3Y npn 500mA 300mW !25V 150MHz
1AM npn 200mA 200mW !40V 250MHz
M4 ?
M5 ?
M6 pnp 100mA 200mW !50V 180MHz
M7 ?
1Ls npn 100mA 330mW 30V 250MHz !200mA
E1U npn 25mA 200mW 15V 2.4GHz
1P npn *10mA 350mW !40V 300MHz !1.0A(1:5@3.4kHz) ?cooled(150*mA) thermal above*

SOT23

Due to the small size of the components, component identification by marking alone is generally difficult if not impossible due to various standards and proprietary marking systems used by manufacturers. This is further compounded by the fact that specialised active components are commonly marked with a different unique preparatory marking that the manufacturer will not tell you (as I have found out previously).

Unless you have schematic diagrams of the UPS the parts came from you are really out of luck and better to just plain buy the transistors you need from component wholesaler or distributor. This goes double for transistors that may have been damaged during the UPS failure or during disassembly (ESD or heat damage, etc) - additionally these parts, unlike passives, are almost impossible for the average person to identify using parameter simulation and matching techniques.

Oh for a simpler time when hobby electronics didn't involve microscopes and the danger of accidentally inhaling the component under inspection.
