Wi Fi in the dock is dangerous to children?

05/21/2007 7:09 PM

Several studies have been carried out to try to estabish whether or not Wi Fi equiped class rooms are a dangerous place to be for children. Are they? Also here in the UK almost any one can bolt a Wi Fi unit to a pole in the street and no one can object are we being treated as plain stupid or do the companies who instal these things just know better? Is Wi Fi a cause for concern?

I wouldn't think that WiFi is that dangerous, the signal powers are low and the frequencies aren't outrageous. The kiddies probably soak up more EME from the other appliances in the room and radar operated automatic doors.

On the other hand I'm always impressed with the ability of people to soak up government funding in statistically improbable studies...

There is far more danger in placing a cell phone next to your brain, and nowadays kids of 7 and younger are already toting cell phones, than radiation from the WiFi equipment. WiFi uses spread spectrum technology and therefore spreads the transmitted signal over a fairly large spectrum of frequencies the net effect is that the power density at any given narrow band frequency slice in it's working band is negligible as far as radiation hazard.

Also another factor is that the distance from the equipment is fairly large.

Radiation hazards are affected by those factors:

frequency of operation (Power density a very important component of that)

Distance of the equipment from humans.

i wouldn't think that it would be anymore harmful than other electronics. Just another scaredy cat thing someone is pushing to cause internet and cable prices to get higher. They'll make the companies do expensive studies and then pass the bill to the consumer. Somehow there is always a small group of people trying to take a good thing and turn it bad.

Hi Heart cooks brain. I disagree with you because Wi-Fi uses microwave technology. I watched a science program on the TV early this week, and the subject matter was about the dangers of Wi-Fi. The researchers found that the intensity of the micro-waves were up to 5 times of that of a mobile phone. As the childrens heads were about 2ft from the Wi-Fi receiver they were absorbing a huge amount of micro-radiation to their heads. Also, another problem was that the children were using laptops on their laps, as yet we do not know what, if any damage is caused to their reprodutive organs. It is highly dangerous to use any sort of technology without first researching what damage it could cause. The Swedes have banned children from using any sort of Wi-FI equipment, that should tell you something. Spencer.
