Just Found a Great RF Amplifier. Is It Worth It?

11/03/2012 10:58 AM

I found this here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOTOROLA-SHL7008-800-1200MHz-2-5W-RF-Amplifier-module-/280559346507?pt=US_Ham_Radio_Amplifiers&hash=item4152a3e34b

It is a Motorola shl7008 RF amplifier.

I had the idea that it could be attached to my 1080 Mhz video transmitter and used to boost the output power to 2.5 watts. The transmitter I have is supposed to be 500mw. The problem is that 500mw may be too much input power for this amplifier to handle in which case I will get a small wireless camera and use the 10mw transmitter inside that.

I have searched for datasheets on this module as the seller is not providing much information, but I could not find any. From what I see here I can power the amplifier on 28v, attach my transmitter to the rf input pin and then attach an antenna to the rf output pin and that should work?

I cannot locate easily a good data sheet on this amplifier. It looks like a custom hybrid component and not a complete RF amplifier package from the few images of the part Google provides. As such, if you do not make a proper strip line or coaxial terminated output wiring then most of the energy will be reflected back into your transmitter and not through your antenna into free space. This might be what is happening in your other thread. A good network analyzer will determine if all of your impedance matching is correct for the frequency you wish to transmit. With a good analyzer you can also trim your antenna to maximize coupling into free space.

Well, 1 is in Chinese and the other is just some table of information for some other component.

Sorry for that. I think this package was custom built for somebody. No data available. I will keep looking.

Only way left is to contact www.motorola.com/, for data-sheet & application notes.

Hi all.

Standard the power was good at 1000Mhz but at 1.3 it was around 300mW.

I removed the lid and between the two RF devices is a stripline with a C to ground about 1/2 way along. I removed the C and refitted it closer to the output device and thats it ! 2.5 watts out at 1300Mhz. At about $10 US its a great device.

To drive it I used a ZLPLL.. Fantastic.. see here.. https://zl2bkc.com/projects/zlpll/

Hope this helps. 73 Mark ZL2WHO
