Quite interesting discussion. Can someone check and give the correct joint category of the following cases?

Head : Non Hemispherical

Case-1

Head - Seam less

Shell - Seam less

Joint Category: B

Case-2

Head - Welded

Shell - Seamless

Joint Category: A or B?

Case-3

Head -Seamless

Shell - Welded (Longitudinal seam)

Joint Category: A or B?

Case-4

Head - Welded

Shell - Welded (Longitudinal seam)

Joint Category: A

Head:Hemispherical

Head - Seam less

Shell - Seam less

Joint Category: A

@Mechanicalmark, your spread sheet link is not working properly. pls check it.

@cingold, I think,UW-11 and UW-12 are not the deciding factor of joint category.Joint category deals with the LOCATION of joints coming in a pressure vessel manufactured in accordance with ASME BPV Sec. VIII.

It is not "my spreadsheet". It is only a website I am aware of.

Honestly, I said those without looking at Section VIII. I'm pretty sure that's for joint efficiency but I don't remember.

There's a figure of a vessel in the UW section that show's what each joint category is. But you also have to read the section to check which detail you need.

I thought at first you were asking for an answer. I can check your work after lunch and let you know if that's right.

ASME B&PV Sec VIII-Div1, 2010, Total 798 Pages

Subsection B-Requirements pertaining to methods of fabrication of pressure vessels. (Page No.163)

Part UW - Requirements for pressure vessel fabricated by welding.

Fig-UW3 - Illustration of welded joint locations TYPICAL of categories A, B, C &D (Page No.165)

It shows only typical joint category. My case-2 and case-3 are not mentioned in that drawing!

I have an older version of the same spreadsheet (from the same website/Author) that might work for you to use as a template to bring up to current Code requirements. If you private message me with your email address I could email it to you.

Yes they are just typical. That's why I said you'll have to read the section too because they loopholes around the illustration are described in there.

Unfortunately, I don't have enough detailed experience to help you much more on this. My advice to you: call ASME. I looked their phone number up online one time and called them directly for interpretations on the code. It helped me.

You fall under the following quote from UW-3:

"Figure UW-3 illustrates typical joint locations included in each category. Welded joints not defined by the category designations include but are not limited to Fig. 5-1, illustration (a) corner joints, Fig. 9-5 jacket closure-to-shell welds, and Fig. 26-13 fillet welds. Unless limited elsewhere in this Division, the UW-9(a) permissible weld joint types may be used with welded joints that are not assigned a category."

No I am in the most up to date version. If your company doesn't already have this, ask for them to use IHS. It's a database of codes where you purchase codes and code updates.

I received a phone call just now from ASME interpretation department regarding the joint category query. My case-2 and case-3 have been declared as joint category 'B'.

Thanks to American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Thanks to American Society of Mechanical Engineers's Interpretation Department. Thanks to all those who participated in this wonderful discussion to find a solution for my problem and guide me in a proper way.
