Internet Explorer is Driving Me Crazy

11/18/2012 1:22 AM

I have Windows 7 Internet Explorer on three computers, and it's driving me nuts. Nothing serious, mind you, just annoying things.

On one computer, clicking on a web site link usually gets me a goofy red x icon. I have to right click the link then hit OPEN to get to the web page. It depends on where I am on the screen--if the link is high up on the page, the link works. Halfway down the page, it doesn't work.

On another computer, hitting the big back arrow on a web page works sometimes. Usually, I have to click it repeatedly, moving the pointer around inside the back arrow until it takes.

On the third computer, when I click a link, the page opens, then dances around, and flashes on and off until the site finally loads up and stabilizes.

None of what happens on one computer happens on any of the others.

There are plenty of other little oddities, but these are the most annoying. Especially since each computer has a different weirdness.

I know there is an updated Explorer out there (G Mail keeps telling me to upgrade), but upgrading anything from Microsoft is always a risky business. So I'll hold off until the last minute. I'd just like to get this version to work.

Ideas?

Internet Explorer is dead in the water... try google chrome, you can import your faves from IE.
It's a bit of a pain until you have it set up how you want, but at least it doesn't stall every few minutes.
Keep 'em both available initially until you are happy with Chrome... then ditch IE.
I expect the various other browsers are fine too. Not sure about the KrisDel pornomatic

I'll add a vote for SlimBrowser.

But the fastest and smallest is still enigma. I still haven't found a lot it doesn't do well even though it has not been updated for years.

I feel your pain, I went back to XP after non of my cad programs worked with Win7 even in virtual mode. Screw MS. And finding all the drivers with new laptops with Win7, you can't. But there are many new ones out there with XP loaded and plan pon buying a few of them. Win8 is stupid, same as Win7. After they are dead, Going Rouge. I just DL'd Chrome a cpl days ago. It's so much faster than IE, but it doesn't have the bells and whistles either. I will continue testing it, Work will either make or break it if I keep it. I use IE all day long, I don't like the tabs, I like to switch with all open windows with Alt tab so we'll see how Chrome works tomorrow.

Hi,

The ideal option is to use Google Chrome. Such issues can be avoided. Use Internet Explorer only if ActiveX or Java is mandatory (I live in S. Korea where most of the sites require ActiveX support. However, the below link suggest I can use it and enable ActiveX as well, but haven't tried it)..... Hope you find it useful.

http://techtips.salon.com/enable-activex-google-chrome-1089.html

PS: Go ahead and update the Internet Explorer as well. I use IE8 and havent come across many problems be it in XP or Vista or Windows7.

Doesn't look like the issue is with IE because same version of IE should behave same on all three computers. In this situation, other Internet browsers might end up behaving the same anyway.

Root root cause of the problem might be a virus, or unauthorised add-on, or some other malware, or probably 'stick keys' as tcmtech suggested in #3 above, or even with the code behind the website.

I'd advise as follows:

1. Open the website from a friends 'trusted' computer using IE and then using other browser(s) and compare behaviour, if the other browser(s) display correctly, then deal with IE as it may please. It might also be helpful to notify the website owner if this happens, because the site may not have been built to be supported on IE.

2. Check for any keys that might be sticky

3. Open Add-ons manager in IE (Menu: Tools > Manage Add-ons), and check under 'Toolbars and Extensions' for any unauthorised or unfamiliar entries and disable and / or delete.

4. Download Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool form http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16

5. Run the download and follow the instructions to rid your computer(s) of any detectable malicious programs.

6. Update your antivirus(es) to the latest deifinitions

7. Scan your computer(s) for viruses and get rid of any found.

8. Try out surfing the site again

I use to have IE, and had nothing but problems with it.

Last year I downloaded Foxfire. I've never had a problem with it!

You asked about how to fix Internet Explorer, not for suggestions on another browser, so I will try to stay on topic. Starmodi has a lot of good ideas. I would also suggest going to your internet options under the tool icon at the top right of your internet explorer window. Reset everything back to default settings, including the advanced settings. Malwarebytes is a good program for cleaning out pesky malware on your computer. I highly recommend Avast antivirus software over just about anything out there, especially considering it has a free version. You can find both through a simple search. If you do use Avast, remember to remove any other antivirus programs you may have. You should never run more than one antivirus program at a time on your computer. Could that be the case now? Check your installed programs in you control panel just to be sure. Last, you could always restore your computers to a period before you started to have these problems, but if it was a while back, you will have problems with any programs and updates you installed afterwards, until you re-install them.

A bloke walks into a garage (automobile repair facility), and, and asks the owner to come and fetch his turn of the century Chevy Cavalier to repair it. The garage owner says "I'm so upset with these darned Cavaliers, please take away one of these brand new (insert your favourite car) for free." But the bloke replies that he'd much rather spend loads of money getting the cavalier running again.

Maybe he likes the Cavalier, is familiar with it, and it does what he needs--while the new car operates mysteriously, takes forever to figure out how to work all the menus on the in-car display, and has problems that nobody knows how to fix yet.

New cars and new software suffer from "transoptimal engineering"--that is, they have so many new features and functions, they don't work any more.

Yep: that's pretty much what's wrong with IE.

Seriously though you wouldn't have any difficulty learning to use one of the other browsers, especially Enigma or SlimBrowser.

Lots of good suggestions for debugging IE - here is one more. I used to use AVG Free or Avast for antivirus for years until about three years ago. Myself and some other techs noted that we often saw the same computers coming in with malware infestations over and over every few months. One of us decided to install Microsoft Security Essentials on his customers machines and they STOPPED coming in every few months. I've since installed it on my machines and it seem to work really good. It will even prompt you to send in suspicious files for examination. I highly recommend it.

The one and ONLY reason people use Internet Explorer, is to get something better. this advice is not a joke, but Internet Explorer is on the other hand a BIG joke...

Good day to you sir...

Re: Internet Explorer is Driving Me Crazy

Hunh...weird

I hear a LOT of people complaining about IE this and IE that...but I have been using IE pretty much exclusively since around 1995 and don't have really any perplexing or persistent problems in memory. In fact, 90% of my employers computers (with over 2,000,000 seats) use IE exclusively. We have no issues with IE other than people complaining that they don't like it.

I seem to remember another company called Netscape that used to hype up the IE problems years ago as well...it got to the point that one company sued the other for this and that. We see where that went.

I digress...If you have three computers that are acting differently and you are absolutely positive that the OS and associated service updates are installed for all software then I would suspect that you have transferred a bug from one machine to the other. Either that or you have issues with each computer which have nothing to do with the browser and since that is the app you may use the most it may appear that the issue is with the program...not the computer itself, which may be misleading.

However...in the end...if switching to a different browser alleviates your ills, by all means do so.

'....We have no issues with IE other than people complaining that they don't like it......'

hmmm. so...

'The problem isn't Internet Explorer, the problem is that people are USING Internet Explorer.'

. or perhaps .

"Internet Explorer doesn't kill browsing enjoyment, People using Internet Explorer kill their browsing enjoyment.'

Re: Internet Explorer is Driving Me Crazy

I guess that's a way to describe it.

I was going more for...there are people who use a different browser at home and have to come to work and use something that is "unfamiliar" to them...or they have developed a liking for the features of another browser and IE feels deprecated to them.

Just about any way one looks at it IE on my work computer is not "broken", it just isn't what people want. I guess one could also equate it to a company car...if you drive a Chevy and your company car is a Ford you may say that Fords suck. The car is fine, it's just not what you like to drive.

I'm with you through almost the end....

...then:

.

'.....if you drive a Chevy and your company car is a Ford you may say that Fords suck. The car is fine, it's just not what you like to drive....'

.

now I think I know what you mean....but it isn't really what the words are saying.

from your description of the problem, I'm almost certain that it is related to Internet Speed and nothing more,

I think you may have a decent thought on this, but one thing the OP said comes to mind. "None of what happens on one computer happens on any of the others." I am guessing that the OP goes to the same websites on all three computers, so the same problems should exist on all three computers if the problem is a result of a slow connection speed. I'm not dismissing your idea, and I think the OP should do a speed check on his connection to be sure. I just feel the OP would have similar problems on all three computers if you were correct.

The three computers are not networked, but they use the same router.

Two are wireless, one is a direct Ethernet connection from the router.

In one system, I am trying to go to links listed on another web site. All the links work, it's just that it depends on where they appear on the page. At the top, if I click the links, they work fine--halfway down, I get a red x.

On the flashy system, I'm going to different web pages. They flash and disappear as they are coming up. And all web sites do this.

On the third system, it doesn't matter what web sites I am using. Clicking on the back arrow requires repeated clicks and positioning.

Two are Windows 7 Home and one is Windows 7 Professional.

Just checked the download speed on this wireless laptop, and it's 22.48 mbps.

I'll try out some the suggested fixes this weekend.
