1998 Chevy Cavalier Brake/Turn Signal Lights Do Not Work

11/25/2012 2:08 PM

Hello, I have a 1998 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L. I have a issue with my brake/turn signal (same bulb for both) it does not work but the front turn signals work and this is what I have figured out so far
1) Fuses and bulbs are good
2) There is electricity to the bulbs because the running lights work
3) The brake switch must work because when I step on the brake the 3rd brake light on the dash works
4) When I use the turn lights the dashboard blinks rapidly
I appreciate any help. Thanks and
GOD Bless you and your family

Does the bulb glow, when you brake? There may be a relay or diode switching for this bulb to work for brake & turn signal. Check relay/diode. Similarly the front turn supply must connect to brake light. Check out that line. If you have the electrical wiring schematic, it will immensely help you troubleshoot.

Do you mean brake/turn both sides don't work on the rear?

It doesn't follow that "There is electricity to the bulbs because the running lights work". They don't use the same wires or all would come on at once.

Dashboard turn lights blinking rapidly is normal when a bulb has blown, or as in your case, when power is not getting to one of them.

Odd thing is so many things failed at once, specially the turn lights as there is separate wire from the switch to each bulb. First I would check the earth (or ground where you are). Possibly they all common up and go to one earthing point, which is not making contact. In fact the more I think about it, that seems the most likely explanation.

This thread should explain how the vehicle is wired. If both sides quit at the same time, exercise the emergency flasher switch about twenty times. Otherwise, follow the suggestions in the attached thread. Good luck.

Okay i had a car with the same problem but it mainly only happens in semis. The switch in the turn signal is most likely what is wrong

Hello and thanks to all I appreciate all the help and tips. I talked to a guy at autozone and he told me to turn on my flashers and they started flashing. The brake lights also started working then, he told me it could be the flasher unit or the brake switch but when I pulled the bulbs out I saw that bulb grease had been used in the past and looked baked on interrupting the flow of electricity. I am trying to clean out the gunk or I may need to replace the socket. Once again thanks to all and

It is not uncommon for the seldom used contacts inside the hazard flasher switch to become corroded, or covered with the grease installed in it, blocking the path of current for the turn signals. As you have done, just continue to exercise the hazard flasher switch many times, and see if that is not all that you need. The grease was there to prevent corrosion.
