Slotted Holes - Max Length

11/27/2012 5:00 AM

Hy

I'm looking for max lenght limits for slotted holes in steel members.

I've found 1,5d in EN 1090-2 Table 11

Do you know bigger limits?

Thanks

If you are HY you better get sober.

On another account holes can not be larger then the steel member. In you case the lenght of steel member will restrict the length of hole.

Now if you are asking this in the sense of structural strength I have to admit I dont know.

Whats the purpose of the hole?

What is the usage? Is it a structural joint? If so, is it a "slip critical" joint?

I found this on the web, It is in English but the origin looks Italian. http://www.fomento.gob.es/NR/rdonlyres/931125B9-DB1F-4159-AB86-9EA42F53F233/103599/05.pdf Our, US, rules are slightly different.

Hy Guys,

yes it is a structural joint. I need a big tolerance... but then I have problem to avoid slipping surfaces

thank You All.

Are u in the US. If so the AISC design manual has in specifications for max slots based on dia of bolt.

Ok I found in AISC specification Chapter J under J3, table J3.3 for long slotted hole requirements. I can send these sections if you like. here is my email address

steven.anderson58@yahoo.com.

the formula is (d + 1/16) x (2.5 x d) for long slots based on bolt dia. The other chart that you have is wrong and is only targeting the required dia. min sizes.

if your question is in/re to [drilling holes in a precast beam], then the length of the slotted holes only involves rotational forces. the clip angle will be designed to carry the entire load. meet me at my mail box

Hy Guys,

slotted holes are for steel members... not in precast beam . I need slotted holes in order to regulate distance of the steel members from the precast beam holes.

But I would like to avoid slipping connections problems and reinforced bolts, so I'm going to use knurled plates with slotted holes

Thanks for AISC and other info
