CT Shorting for Spare Cores Link

11/28/2012 12:12 PM

Please answer this question,

I have HT (6.6 ) KV motor feeder.

It has dual core CT,.

1 st core as protection CT ( U1-U2 for R phase, V1-V2 for Y phase , W1-W2 for B phase), it is connected to relay and is of 5P10.

second core is metering CT ( again same as above that ia 3 phase) with secondary of 1 Amps & cl 1 accuracy.

Here is the problem,

I want to connect only single phase ammeter ( at motor control station in field) to this metering CT ( suppose I connect to Y phase).

If I short circuit the R & B phase in switchgear , then can there be any problem....

and what kind of???

thanks

You should be able to connect a single-phase ammeter to only one of the phases of the 2nd core of the CT. The other 2 phases should be shorted and grounded. However, you will know only what the current is in the Y phase, and not the other two phases. That's probably not a big deal with a motor.

Hi,

You may also consider installing a selector switch with the ammeter in order to retain flexibility to view current in any phase.

All the best.
