ASD Relay?

11/28/2012 2:57 PM

my mother in law has a 98 jeep grand cherokee with a 4.0 liter, she is out of town and needed a jump. someone crossed the cables, now nothing she tells me. im a tech but the vehilcle isnt here. im thinking it may have tripped the asd relay, or burned it up. any thoughts would be great.

Just Google "asd relay jeep".

This looks like it might someday rival the legendary Chevy Cavalier in google hits.

The horn relay is the same configuration as the ASD. Swap it and see what happens. If the horn blows with the ASD relay, you can continue on with your troubleshooting. Most likely the ECM.

You will be very lucky if that is all that happened.

In the future, connect the Red jumper leads to the proper battery posts and the black leads to the engine blocks. Then if you make a mistake, you will get sparks, but no damage.

Don't know if the ECM (the likely cause of your problems) is the same from Cherokee to Grand Cherokee, but they are available on e-bay

So,

I see that this code was first discovered on the "hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy".

So, 42 really is the answer to life, the universe, and everything!

Nah, I Googled a few things and found this, and sort of hoped my comment might prompt our new friend to share any codes that have been thrown.

Your mother in law tells you nothing.

What is the problem?

Yeah, it'll be pretty hard to get that to stick on your sister-in-law.

Is the car throwing any codes at all? Is it fixed?

Get a cheap volt meter on it. With the headlights turned on, Test the battery voltage, then the battery to cable voltage drop at each battery cable. Then check the master fuse located next to the battery, attached to the pos terminal. Send results.
