Impact Testing Requirement for Stainless Steel

12/08/2012 2:16 AM

whether we need to use Impact tested SS304L material for Pipe, Fittings , Flanges and Valves for servie temperatureof minus 175 Deg C ( -175 DegC)

As per ASME B 31.3, 323.2.2, ( Table A-1), For materials A312 TP 304L / A358 304L / A240 304L / A182 F304L / A403 WP304L, the lower limit for temperature is minus 253 DegC ( -253 DegC)

((323.2.2 Lower Temperature Limits, Listed Materials

(a)

A listed material may be used at any temperature not lower than the minimum shown in Table A-1, provided that the base metal, weld deposits, and heat affected

zone (HAZ) are qualified as required by the applicable entry in Column A of Table 323.2.2.))

Table 323.2.2, column A, A4 states impact testing is required if Carbon content is more than 0.1% or if the material is not solution heat treated.

So can I presume that If SS304L Pipe, fittings, flanges and valves, base materials are solution heat treated, we don't have to ask for impact testing

Could you please advise whether the presumption is correct?

Based on the information you provided, I would say that your presumption is correct.

However, your on-site inspector may be aware of circumstances which may render your opinion invalid.

txs lyn, this is the first time i am dealing with a temperature about -175DegC..

what are the possible circumstance which you mentioned as per ASME B 31.3?

whether note no.3 of table 323.2.2 is applicable for this case? i think note no.3 is applicable only if carbon content is more than 0.1% or if the material is not solution heat treated? is that correct?!

That's up to the on-site quality team, if you have one.

I have no idea of the requirements of the project. We can't see it from here.

From the given wording, if the carbon content is more than 0.1%, it still needs to be impact tested.

Then, according to the given language, no impact testing is required.
