Sleeve Design Filler

12/10/2012 6:08 AM

In dike wall, when pipe is passign through the sleeve, which is one size higher than the line size, there is filler filled around the line inside the sleeve and outside the pipe to seal it, is there any damage to the filler material if there is some expansion in the line??? if yes then how to solve the problem?

It depends upon:

  • The filler material
  • The line material
  • The sleeve material
  • The sizes of the line and the sleeve
  • The actual temperature and the temperature swing range
  • The thickness of the filler
  • The thickness of the dike
  • The modulus of expansion of the filler
  • The materials wetting the filler
  • The difference in head between the inside and the outside of the dike
  • The amount of movement of the inner line relative to the sleeve
  • And a host of other things that cannot be seen from here and are not listed in the original post.

Rather than re-invent the proverbial wheel why not just copy an installation locally that works, and re-use it <rhetorical question - NNTR>?

You may want to look into "Expandable Waterstops". Do a Google Search for them. There are many many manufacturers of these types of waterstops.

Here is a Link to one of my favorites that I have specified over the years for pipe penetrations in hydraulic structures:
