USA or Russia (Soviet Union) is best in submarine technology?I heard that Russians are superior than any other country in the world in submarines. Is it true?

Well, if nothing else, there is something to be said for titanium hulls... On the flip side, let's hope they've abandoned hydrogen-peroxide-based oxidisers for their torpedo propellants - like everyone else has, and for good reason. The stuff is corrosive and produces copious amounts of hydrgen gas when it comes in contact with metal torpedo innards. It's what sank the Kursk.

Actually,I read a news which states that Russian submarines secretly patrolled US coasts and US navy was not aware of submarine presence! That shows Russians have stealth technology in submarines which will give them an upper hand in oceans.

That, or the U.S. Navy did see them but is loath to play its upper hand lest it give itself away. Don't believe all the misinformation you read. :)

If the US navy was not aware of the submarine's presence, who was?

If!

Actually, I heard that the US did detect their presence with not just one incursion, but multiple times.

What is new is the fact that Russia has been dramatically increasing their presence (land, sea, air) about and around our borders and in other areas.

Russia appears to be returning to the tactics it employed through out the Cold War of testing our detection abilities and resolve.

Re: Best Submarine technology

That is my understanding. Somewhere I have an intel report (I have a paid subscription for my job) and it mentioned this infraction and a number of others.

Keep in mind that there is a lot of military intel that is classified secret or beyond that we just don't get and what information we do get is possibly true or it may not be true.

The actual capabilities of our Navy's anti-submarine technology is very highly guarded. So we will probably never really know just how well or poorly those detection capabilities are.

Even if you have excellent abilities to detect submarines you probably do not want to telegraph exactly how good those abilities are. It is best to keep your potential enemies guessing as to your actual capabilities.

My guess is that we have the ability (we certainly have a sophisticated detection network on both of our coasts that employs a broad spectrum of technologies) to track any underwater craft from any nation better than 90% of the time it is running. I think no craft is totally undetectable, but they may be periods where it becomes difficult or impossible to track due to a number of circumstances.

Stealth tech for subs must take on many different guises, dependent on what you are trying to hide from.

Sound deadening which resists sonar is one, sound isolation which prevents sound penetration from inside to out is another (passive sonar), titanium hulls (which are ideally for depth not stealth) also have some benefit for electro and magneto dynamic qualities, stealth tech for IR signatures and satellite reconnaissance is still a sticky bit, though.

There is no visual stealth which has been remotely "successful" as of yet. Heat blooms from plant startups and vessels which go missing from imagery are great indicators which tells an adversary to start looking other places.

The US is always "aware" of adversarial presence in near-shore waters in one way or another.

Of note is that most Russian vessels (or Chinese for that matter) do not need to even leave port in order to fire off a missile which can harm US assets (i.e., mainland US) without warning. Stealth isn't even an issue there, so spending a ton of R&D dollars for stealth at this point may be back-burnered.

The problem with that is time-in-flight. The closer you can stealthily get to a target the shorter the flight time for a strike and the less of a chance that any missile can be stopped with anti-missile technology. So there is an enormous advantage for stealth.

Re: Best Submarine technology

Well the electronics in a western sub would be more reliable than a Russian sub, the hull from a Russian sub is stronger because Russia has access to titanium.

Oh, and the torpedoes in Russian subs are hazardous (see Kursk).

It also depends on what kind of sub, do you mean attack subs, missile subs, coastal subs (the Dutch walrus sub was also very good when it became operational, but that was in 1990), etcetera.

Of course! Just ask any Russian loyalist (preferably one who has not actually served aboard a submarine).

.

The Swedes will probably have a different opinion.

Since neither the Russians, nor the US, publish details, there is no answer to the question, beyond speculation.....................at least not here.

The cool thing about cave-dwellers, regardless of nationality, is that if you are out of range there is no threat. The range we are talking here is pretty much small arms and RPG fire.

Cave dwellers don't scare me here in the States. It's when the cave dwellers crawl out and spread their disease that it becomes a concern for the average Joe.

Neither, New Zealand is in fact the best.

In all the years no one has ever seen or detected a New Zealand submarine. Why the only way you would know we had a sub program is that our maritime maps include submarine specific navigational information and the few stories over the years about secret sub bases.

No.

Russia has (and had) some good ideas and technology but the US has mostly been superior in technology (both offensive and stealth) and quality (a really important factor) over the years and is currently still the number one.
