Interestingly I would also add Internet Search Engine.

It is amazing how much you can accomplish in the field of research and design using just a database search tool.

Alternatively some form of Spice modeling program for electrical circuit design and modeling (although the usual warnings about Spice modeling isn't perfect so you still need to know the basics of electrical circuit design to use and interpret it). There are a few available for free on the internet to try, but the best ones will cost you.
