Google goes "Big Brother"

05/23/2007 5:55 PM

It is said that Google will soon know more about us through our computer usage than we know about our selves. Should we worry?

Only if you have something to hide.

Homeland security has already tapped into the internet and the phone lines. They already know everything that is being transmitted.

It's not about hiding more about targeted advertising. (Money)

Who said, "the information gives to be able".

Still we are in the era of innocence?

And the great brother not to whom takes care of, if not to that.

and history is repeated or never finished.

Well considering I search for everything from A to Z. It no wonder I get so much spam.

When I' can't fall asleep at night. I'll do a search for whatever happensd to pop into my head. Try it sometime. You can put anything in the search engine and it will find something someplace.

On the other hand, if you're surfing about the first thing that comes to mind, isn't that like a Rorschach Ink Blot Test? Now they really know what makes you tick!!!

Absolutely! Remember how Google caved in to Bejing's demands? From the NY Times:

"To obey China's censorship laws, Google's representatives explained, the company had agreed to purge its search results of any Web sites disapproved of by the Chinese government, including Web sites promoting Falun Gong, a government-banned spiritual movement; sites promoting free speech in China; or any mention of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre."

Is it a long leap for Google to go from purging its search results to handing over its search results? Let's discuss.

I sure wish that someone in our government would figure out that China is in business for China. They are acting in their interest and will continue to do so. Their goal is the economic dominance of the world. Nothing less. But can we blame them; after all so is ours!!!

Sorry; but if you are referring to the U.S. you are grossly incorrect. We are not prosperous because others are poor. There is no dominance required to maintain our position. It is the result of a free market. China, on the other hand, is trying to win the industrial revolution by breaking the backs of their own citizens. Hardly a comparison to the US style of living. You should try living here in the US. If you already live here then I feel sorry for your distorted view of the country's philosophy-You need to look at our living style in the context of all humans throughout the world, then comment.

Uh, excuse me, but you need to go back to 1950 and read the US Strategic Security Initiative. It clearly lays out how the US will interfere around the world in other countries to maintain and improve the American standard of living.

Check it out. Start around 1950 and every so many years it's updated.

Also, sorry - this is definitely not the place for this discussion, so...

Go somewhere else and decide what posts are appropriate, heck you would fit right in with the Chinese govt...Which is what this thread is about. Like you, the Chinese govt feels that if they do not like reading something then no one else should be allowed to read it. (apparently Google feels the same)

Provide some evidence showing direct actions we are taking to unfairly dominate, then explain why you continue to live here? By the way China is currently hiring censures. Oppurtunity is waiting for you.

- Meaning?

I'm sorry, your right. With more inspection, I've found that we are the guys that only wear the white hat. I'm a smilin' and I'll talk to ya later, Mevel123, Iz gots ta ride back to da Candyland ranch, which by the way is in China.

One more thing, this is an Engineering web site. I don't think CR4 wants their resources taken up with a political, relogious, or philosophical free-for-all.

Purging it's search results are as dangerous as handing them over to the Fed's. This filtering is censorship. The censorship in this case is inhibiting the spread of free ideas and in turn freedom. Technically it is assisting to prop up an inferior and inhumane form of government. If what you say is true then Google should be ashamed. Perhaps if Google would stand their ground the Chinese govt would be forced to deal with it a better way. Heck they might stop pirating our operating systems.

I say not a far leap since both are simply capitulations to government.

Is it a long leap for Google to go from purging its search results to handing over its search results? Let's discuss.

Google is a business with a valuable resource it can sell. I was going to say it's only a question of 'when' not 'if' they sell individuals tracking records , but I suspect we are already there. The only issue is how data is cross-linked and who it is sold to. Such actions can be for the good of individuals and the population as a whole , but can also be used otherwise. A potential employer might willingly pay for a google profile. eg too many health related searches and you may be a liability. Too much fantasy stuff and you may be a weirdo ,Too much legal stuff and you may be a trouble maker. etc

Google decision to play ball with the Chinese demands must surely be a commercial one , based on the company's overall ability to generate money by doing so. People worry about identity theft in the context of their bank account. Damage to a cyber ID will be the next big thing.

The Big Brother must know every thing about his small brothers, to punish them at the critical moment before making mistakes. So don't worry as you don't make any mistake.

I think Google is already dictating what you are seeing. Have you noticed how the same links repeatedly show up say every 10th or 25th time ( always on the top of the page.) I know that there is things you can do to make your home page move up in the rankings, but how do you make them show up on the top of every page?

Even following all the tips of how to increase your ratings, and being the only one selling an original one of a kind, I cannot get my web page to display high in the search results.

Doing, a search that I look for results in my home town, and only in my country, the first results are always from the US

The regular search results seem to always return 75% "sponsored Links"

Re: Google goes "Big Brother"

Yes, you are right, but I view Google as a "yellow pages" (a standard phone directory for business) I expect the 'paid' links to be the most offered- and Google to have levels of 'visibility' for it's paying customers. As far as your results, using Google, they do have a 'preference' page allowing you to further customise search results and perhaps get Canada listing's first. You will be trading some minor privacy items for better results.

What I do not like, is Google blocking a user from seeing a link purely for political reasons. If I paid to have my site listed at the world wide level then it should be listed. Let each country's govt write their own laws as to which links can/cannot be 'clicked' This is already standard practice and it puts the enforcement responsibilities on the ones choosing the censoring.

If Google keeps submitting to outside govt censorship I feel they will regret it in the future because the demands will only continue to grow.
