Why Spinning Rugby Ball Improves Distance and Accuracy ?

12/14/2012 12:07 PM

1.may be because of gyroscopic effect the projectile will be accurate as tumbling is reduced eventually travelling a little bit longer but i want to be educated with the boundary layer conditions and frictional forces acting on it. 2. can we consider spinning ball as rolling friction between air and ball?

This sounds like homework.

Where have you looked for the answer, so far?

homework !! no.. i was expressing my doubt.

i didn't find any boundary layer study on spinning rugby ball...

while basics of friction says for rolling friction, area of contact is less than static so i doubt if this apply on spinning rugby ball as the ball is completely submerged in a fluid(air) so the area of contact is same for both static and spinning.

only fluid dynamics specialist could understand what my doubt is about actually...

Touche, Lyn!

LOL, you have to grow a fluid dynamic skin. (I thought you had that already!)

This does look like homework.

I bet if every search you do is doubled you will get more useful hits. "Rugby Ball" might be what you are interested in but I suspect that "Baseball" will yield more hits and most will contain information useful for rugby.

There has been a lot of information published for baseballs. "Golf ball", "tennis ball" and "football" would also be useful since the spin can have a dramatic effect on how they fly.

When you can't find what you are looking for sometimes it is useful to look in a carefully selected wrong place.

ya.. i'll tell you why i'm specific about rugby ball, in the subject of fluid dynamics the shape of the body is very crucial to determine its behaviour or performance.

and the direction of spin do matters for rugby ball but not on spherical ball(very less) ...

aerodynamics of baseball, tennis ball, golf ball, football are of same class and have no match with rugby ball, bullet, missile etc

What about coriolis?

How about boundary layer?

I don't know about distance, but accuracy it does improve.

The same reason why a tennis ball hit with extreme top spin(Like Nadal) seems never to float and go out of the court.

The same thing for a bullet which comes out spinning out of the barrell .

All these are for accuracy.
