Mayan Oversights

12/19/2012 3:55 PM

the Mayans weren't too bright, they clearly blew the chance to add a few more shopping days to the calendar to increase sales. they had nothing on American marketers

"the Mayans weren't too bright".... hmmm, even as a joke that statement doesn't have much merit. I don't subscribe to the world is going to end on Friday cr4p, but their knowledge of the earth, solar system, galaxy, and universe, just amazes me, especially when you consider the time period they lived in. Did any other civilization possess such knowledge at that time, NO! And to top that, they were smart enough to have their Christmas shopping done the week before!

If the Mayans were so smart and could foretell the future...why are there no more Mayans?

Because maybe they were smart enough to leave this planet.

Actually.......there's lots and lots of Mayans still carrying on in Guatemala who've never heard of the doomsday. They just happened to have abandoned city life and pursued an agricultural one. http://ghn.globalheritagefund.org/?id=8 (ps....the pyramid here is larger than the ones in Egypt). They also had a structured writing 'alphabet' (glyphs) that no other Americas civilization developed to the linguistically structured level they did.

There are hundreds of thousands of Mayans, except that they don't posses the ancient knowledge of their ancestors, due in great part to Torquemada's "pious" acts of faith. Have you ever got to read the Popol Vuh ? You'll be thrilled !!

Besides they didn't do any sort of prediction about the end of the world, and I dare any "expert" to tell me in what codex is it writen.

Didn't Spanish Conquistadors have a hand in ending the Mayan civilization?

That and the flu they brought with them that the local population had no defence against.

The Mayan civilization, as we know it from doccuments of their highest achievements, was already gone before the Spaniards got here, the conquistadors (along with local allies) fought the Aztecs.

But dense popualtions of all the groups, including Mayans were decimated by diseases from Europe, that is absultely true.

Yeah, but what better time to spend every dime you have, but just before the end of the world? Maybe it'll fix the economy..................if we live.

I thought that 12/20/12 was the last day of the cycle and 12/21/12 was the first of the new cycle thus making Thursday 12/20/12 the end.....

Yep...actually 1112 UTC...that's 0312 for me (PST).

We ought to set up a CR4 roll-call at that time. Anyone and everyone post on a thread if and when you realize you lived through the apocalypse!

It's the day of our Christmas party.

I have just requested the band plays some suitable end of the world music including REM.
