Fiber optic power to electrical power

05/24/2007 1:00 AM

Hello Friends

I want small module which can take fiber optic light power and can convert into 2W +/-5V DC output or 2W +/-12V output. I think there is one company in the world making such devices commercially but I lost their link.

I will also be interested in photocells that can deliver 2W output power from focused light source with about 30% efficiency. I can pump 6W light power on the device to get 2W electrical power.

If you think you can build such device and want to do it them write to me or discuss the design details here with all to share the idea.

Is this for a current detetor your developing? Im working in this area of getting a modulated light signal as to current polarity and magnitude from H.Volts cables at low cost.

Seems you want the reverse, let me know if this is your interest.

Perhaps, you are using a fiber optic high voltage sensor. My requirement is to generate power from light at desired place from portable small light source like LED or LASER Diode of <10W.

I will like to use it in place of normail DC-DC converters for isolated power source.

I located this web site

I don't think it is possible with current commercial hardware. My thinking is set out below.

The maximum efficiency of a solar cell is of order 25% (at the moment). The average energy density of sunlight at the earth's surface is about 1kW/m2. Thus to obtain 2W after conversion you would need light equivalent to the sunlight falling on a square patch 90mm per side, then it would have to be concentrated to 'fit into' a fibre, maybe 0.2mm2 (0.5mm diameter fibre). That would make the spot at the end of the fibre about 40 000 times brighter than sunlight. There would then be losses associated with re-formatting the light to spread it over the surface of the solar cell.

Regards, Greg

Please see above answer #2. This development is 20 year old.

Hello Shyam,

indeed its possible to supply lo-power equipment via fiber optic.

Years ago I had contact to JDSU.com and their devices are quite ok for a power solution up to 1W. But they have very high prices knowing that applications of that kind never are in the low price region - and so they want a big peace of meat, too.

Do you need a large distance and lo capacitance between supply and load? Perhaps there are other concepts, with cost-effective air pressure gensets par example. Or, at low distances, you could use small solar cells "tuned" with FRESNEL adhesives. Another way is to use piezoelectric conversion methods by mechanically energysing a piezo stick.
Regards Uwe

Yes I was just thinking of that piezo converters. I developed that ESD Gun when I was a nuclear scientist and with atomic energy.

You may as well use a solar charged battery!

Photonic power is generated using optical fiber from km distance into small device buried somewhere at unknown place in very difficult environment. That is the main purpose as it gives power where nothing else reaches safely. It is a very small power that is needed. Batteries are good alternative but they can not give 1W to 10 years continuously in small place. Photonic device use external optical power and hence have constant power all the time.

You need to understand our need first.

Try IXYS, they make very efficient Light to Voltaic pile generators, but only at micro amps.

Did you mean opto-isolators? No, that is not what I want.

The exact ref. is Clare solar products part of IXYS. tiny photo voltaic generators 8volts 100microamp. theybuse them to generate V for mosfet solid state relays.

I think they are still at primitive stage. CP Clare had good experience with photovoltaic devices and they are almost 25 years old company I suppose. Their first product I used as analog optically isolated relay and they were good. I think they will come up with much better material soon or may not be disclosing due to fear of competition. Business world is funny. Unless you disclose, people can not buy and you never disclose all your cards.

I will try their parts also even though power is low. I may still find some us. I think you have given good reference. Thanks.
