Semi Automatic Versus Full Auto

12/22/2012 12:38 PM

Please, I don't want this to be another for/against thread, I'm bothered because terms are thrown around as though we all understand them. We do all understand them, but it is evident that we all have a different understandings.

I am a ignoramous when it comes to the technicalities of these types of weapon. The protests that they are different and that the semi is not a rapid fire machine bothers me. Is rapid fire a technical term that has no link to the actuality how quickly it can be fired? I remember watching a sergeant make my Lee Enfield 303 sound almost as fast as the Bren. So I searched. The semi might be slower at firing aimed shots but...

An AK and a Glock 27 not equipped for rapid fire

Before we discuss the case for and against these weapons, shouldn't we have a better understanding of the terminology. If this guy isn't firing rapidly, what is he doing?

He's pulling the trigger every time a bullet is fired. The only limitation to rate of fire is how fast he can pull the trigger.

In my younger days, I would hold my model 59 in my left hand and fan the trigger with my right index finger. I've had people ask me if I'd somehow converted it to full auto.

Surprisingly, you can get fairly accurate with some practice.

Full auto means that the thing keeps firing until the magazine is empty, or you release the trigger.

I've also seen cranks that attach to the trigger guard that enable rapid fire just by turning the handle.

Remember, always point the end with the hole in it at the target.

A semi automatic is good if you can hit what you aim for. A full automatic is good if you don't care what you hit.

I've been know to unhook the sling from the butt stock of an M-16 and stand on it to keep the muzzle from climbing when shooting full auto.

He is rapidly firing, no argument.

I have a M&P 15-22 assault rifle which fires .22 long rifle rimfire ammunition. It came with (2) magazines with 25 round capacity each.

I can completely empty a magazine in about 5 seconds. Since it is such a small caliber round, I can do so with good accuracy, something not possible with my .308 centerfire AR. This equates to a rate of approximately 300 rounds per minute.

A fully automatic .223 or M-16 can fire over three times as fast in fully auto mode (950 rounds per minute).

So while a semi-automatic weapon might seem to be a rapid fire weapon, it's not comparatively so.

I too have never figured out what all the fuss was about semi automatic and full automatic or the relevancy to clip size either.

I am by no means a fire arms expert but I can assure you that changing clips on my old 22 rifle is at most a 2 second delay and as far as how fast it can shoot I can also pull the trigger faster than it's capable or resetting itself for the next bullet.

As far as gun laws are concerned they are for people who choose to follow them and that's it. If I don't like or care to follow the law there is nothing stooping me from modifying any firearm to do far more than what its stock design allowed for including custom designing massive clips if I feel like it as well.

However I am more of a be patient and wait for my target type. Spraying bullets is for dummies. Taking 1" nuts and bolts off fence posts at 100+ yards without a scope is more my thing which if I ever go off the deep end puts me well within the realm of being they type of nut that would get a good long range rifle and drops people one at a time from half a mile out or more using hidden and unknown locations.

Try charcoal, I use them at 100 yards and you can see when you don't miss. Milk jugs filled with at 100 yards for larger calibers.

It doesn't depend on the weapon alone but on the kind of people using it & their beliefs, culture etc. Remember the wild west where the "fittest or the man who draws first" survived". The same community recently attacked Vietnam,Iraq,Afghan etc helped countries like Pakistan,Srilanka to massacre the "have-nots" etc, planned or advised to assasinate leaders,de-stabilised nations, communities, regimes and so on. Even without automatic or semiautomatic massacres happened during the periods of Yenghis Khan, Alexander the great,Napolean,Julius Caeser etc
