Ferritte Core

12/27/2012 3:57 PM

Hi,

I would like to know why an overmolded ferriitte core is used at the output terminal of the switching laptop power supply? Is it to make it compliance to FCC regulation?

Why isnt the ferrite core used at the incoming ac leads?

We have an led light engine module takes in 120vac and powering up a bank of leds at around 48V. We are having problems with passing FCC test.

Where could I put the ferrite core to solve this noise problem? Any inputs?

Thanks

The location, ferrite choice and switching supply frequency work into getting a laptop and power supply to meet FCC interference regulations under all loads. Getting your application to meet FCC regulations is a tedious process. Not all electrical engineers can do this. Those who can get paid for their labors, knowledge and experience.

With what specific portion of FCC testing...and at what frequency are you running your LED bank?

The frequency that we are running is around 70Khz.

Thanks

Bring the frequency down to 15 kHz.

I'm waiting for someone to tell him where to put the ferrite.

It all depends on the fee.

Ferrite? Is that what you call a baby Ferret?

Side note (of a tangent): Anyone care to know what you call a group of ferrets?

?

?

?

?

Since you can all cheat with Google, the term is a "business" of Ferrets.

Ok, as it is Christmas I give away some thoughts free of charge.

1) The inputfilter in most cases is due to the load currents it needs to handle smaller and integrated on the PCB of the power supply.

2) At the output a current compensation choke is used to suppress noise. As the currents at the lower voltage output are higher the ferrite core needs to be bigger to avoid that it goes into saturration. The two windings have to be done with a thicker wire. mainly the diameter of the supply cord wires will be used to the notebook. So the choke mechanically it gets fat and bulky. It is therefore simpler just to mold it over. And you can have a smaller power supply box.

The location where to have the current compensation choke depends on the source of the noise. Some notebooks will create noise which will leave the notbook via the supplyvoltage cable - so put the choke close to the notebook end. If the source is the power supply -so place it just behind the power suppy. But a professional EMI Testing lab will give you the hint what you need to do - based on the issues at hand - if you ask or if you pay their fee..

How much costs you to fail FCC compliance test?

How much costs you to hire a competent engineer?

If you would be near to that, you would know the answers, and you don't.

You have 3 choices:

1,. Test, test and test again. And pay.

2,. Hire the right guy. And pay.

3,. Sprinkle your "design" with this and that, blow your BOM. And pay.

And maybe still fail. That is basic to any manufacturing.

By the way, I and many others know how to do it. But, we worked for it, and you want to get it on the cheap. Well, you get what you pay for.

Moomoo,

This link link might give you some light in the darkness and shadow answers of this post. Is it because it is holiday time?
