What Happened In A Coal Boiler If You Use The "EGR" Like In Diesel Car.

01/03/2013 11:41 AM

Hello everybody,

It is my first question here so sorry if I don't use the right protocol.

In modern Diesel car all engines use a "EGR" exhaust gas recirculation to decrease the NOx and particulates emissions. Approximatively the exhaust gas have two utilities : Decrease the amont of oxygen in the chamber and decrease the combustion temperature. These advantgaes have impact directly on thermal NOx mostly produced during Diesel combustion.

I would like to know if someone have a good idea of what happend if you mix exhaust gas and fresh air in a coal boiler using pulverized burners.

On one hand the thermal NOx will decrease but on the other hand what happend to the Fuel NOx ? stay stable, Increase and so lead to a negative impact of the EGR phenomena ?

Thanks a lot for your answers.

Merry Xmas to you.

Pierre

It's been done for years, here's just one example:

Google on Boiler EGR for much more info.

For boilers, the technique is called "Flue gas Recirculation". It is a method to reduce NOx and may be combined with low NOx Burners

In smaller boilers, the system typically recirculates a portion of the flue gas back to the windbox. A fan may be required for an assist. New dampers are needed.

The system should be designed by the boiler vendor as the new configuration has a different flame path and operating temperature
