Pulling Down the Amps

05/24/2007 2:13 PM

Televisions can draw more power than your toaster-oven, but figuring out which models are more or less efficient based on manufacturer supplied information is complicated. CNET reviewers have tested the actual power use of more than 50 TVs, and provide watts-per-square-inch efficiency ratings for plasma, LCD, and rear-projection TVs.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Display Technologies, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Display Technologies today.

Plasma screens, the big 40" plus sizes are horrendous power guzzlers. Bring back the good old CRT the LCD are slightly better on power consumption but they lack brightness and true blacks as well as having a lower contrast ratio. Not all new things are better.

There's a company in Japan that's come up with a way of providing a very wide spectrum of red, green and blue using a laser driven piece of fiber optic. Their target market? Displays!!!

Then also the micro Organic Light Emitting Diode TV sets in testing phases with LG and Eastman Kodak. LEDs draw a lot less power, and often give more output light than traditional vacuum incandescents and flourescent gas lighting. I remember reading about a project on converting a flashlight to run on LEDs, I think it was in an issue of PopSci. Supposedly you could put as many of the suckers w/resistors into the thing as you could fit, and it would still last longer than the vacuum-tungsten filament bulb originally in the flashlight. I'm suprised that LEDs aren't applied more to practical uses like household lighting.

The only problem with OLEDs is the lifespan, ie, a blue OLED gets roughly 5k hours of use. However, if they were made with phosphorescent materials, the lifespan would be increased. It's like fixing your TV would be like changing a lightbulb.

Yeah, but ya' know, I get a lot more entertainment from TV's than toaster ovens, so the extra cost is worth it to me.
