Half Toner Ford Bantam

01/18/2013 6:29 AM

I own a 2003 Ford Bantam 1.3xli or something like that, and the fuel gauge comes on-and-off from time to time, sometime even when the engine is idling. What do I need to do solve this problem, it has been doing this for over six months now? The gauge is consitently in the RED even after a full-tank refueling. Help please

You need a new fuel gauge sending unit.

"... it has been doing this for over six months now?"

This trouble appears to have existed at least a year.

Is this truly a huge problem? Keep it fueled up, and be secure in the knowledge that you are smarter (more aware of the fuel level) than the computer in the pickup truck.

1. Note mileage.

2. Fill tank to the maximum and fill a small reserve can.

3. Drive vehicle till it runs out of fuel.

4. Note the mileage. This is the target mileage.

5. Put contents of can in fuel tank, drive to fuel station.

6. Note mileage.

7. Fill tank.

8. Refill tank before reaching target mileage.

Or, replace sending unit as Doorman said.

Doorman wouldn't replace the sender. We are considering a ten year old economy vehicle in South Africa, and he would live with the fuel guage erroneous reporting.

He can understand that Maggie wants it to report accurately, but he would be thankful that the fuel guage is the only trouble in the vehicle.

He might, however, carry a graduated stick to check the fuel level once in a while.

Oh, no trouble.

Remember, someday you might be old and cranky like me!

Why?

I guess this isn't a very big problem, if he's been living with it for a year. I guess he thought a new thread might yield better answers.

He should buy a Cavalier. We'd know how to fix them.

Gentlemen and I say that in jest! It could be the float assembly and not the sending unit. I had that problem on one tank in my van, just as cheap to change it all once you drop the tank to get at it. And aren't we all old and cranky old men or is that just my wife's imagination.
