Photo Sensitive Lighting Controls

05/25/2007 3:56 AM

Dear experts,

Please advise me, how to connect the PHOTO SWITCH to control automatically the out door lightings. In the Photo Switch three leads, Line, Neutral & Load available. Line & Load I connected series to contact coil across supply, but why it is not activating even I tried with many Photo Switch. Please explain all the possible causes and faults in this case.

Lavy Bastin.

You connect the (N) terminal to the Neutral wire. (L) Live terminal to the Live wire.

The load terminal to your "Light" the other side of the light is connected to a Neutral!

It will spring to life. Make sure you know you "Load" wire from you "Neutral" wire.

All the best.

Some of those photo switches are kind of interesting.

Light causes current to flow, heating a bimetal strip, that opens contacts to your lamp. When it gets dark, the bimetal cools, closes the contacts and your light goes on. If it is not dark enough the light won't go on. If you cover the "eye" it can take quite a long time before it switches. Some I have played with have taken close to 30 minutes to switch.

Brain Wave gave good advice, but since you ask this question and mention a coil,
I would caution you to be sure the coil is rated for the voltage, (line?), to which
you propose to connect it and that, if you are in a control circuit, the voltage
is proper for the photocell you are using.
