English is an odd language, in that is can be misused and abused, and the meaning still comes through. Most native English speakers make allowances when someone who is not a native English speaker tries to use it, as happens with many other languages when an English speaker tries them. Some ideas:

  • Are English radio programmes available locally, perhaps, such as the BBC World Service? The pace of the speech is slower and the style of the speech clearer on the World Service than that in normal use, which gives the listener whose native tongue is not English a better chance at understanding it.
  • What internet-based English speech services are available locally? Here, most of the home broadcasting stations offer audio- and video-streams over the internet, enabling people to stay in touch with things at home while overseas.

The best thing to do is keep trying.

Quite. The language was slightly wrong and the meaning came through despite the error, which is a useful illustration and perhaps a confidence-builder for the original poster. Even native English speakers get it wrong sometimes.
