What is the Name for a Typical Acetylene Production Device?

01/29/2013 8:01 AM

what is the formal or specific name for a typical actylene production device comprising a mixing section, a ventruri construction, a burner block and a reaction champer? could it be called cracking furnace as it cracks the methane into C2H2 by the heat released by partial oxidation of a portion of methane with oxyen.

Sorry, but no where in your provided link was there any mention of actylene or any other alkyne, only various alkanes and alkenes.

Calcium carbide and water yield ample quantities of acetylene, somewhat dangerously, but ample.

At best, any type of cracking chemistry will only produce a small fractional yield of the acetylene desired, since this is only a by-product, typically removed by hydrogenation.

A carbon arc furnace operating at 2000°C will produce calcium carbide (assuming the correct starting materials), and a carbon arc with hydrogen flowing in the arc chamber, will indeed produce (some) acetylene. Do not try either at home.
