The maximum reactive power capability corresponds to the maximum reactive power that the generator may produce when operating with a lagging power factor. There are typically three factors that limit the reactive power capability of a generator, all of which have to do with thermal limits:

  1. Armature heating limit: the armature windings heat up as more Q (and P) flow through it. At some point, there is a safe thermal limit that needs to be respected. If you need more Q, you can get around this by oversizing the armature windings.
  2. Field current limit: same as 1) except for the field winding. The effects of over/under excitation limiters in the voltage regulator will also have an influence.
  3. End-region heating limit: caused by eddy-currents in the stator laminations at the (axial) ends of the generator. Heating effects are worse in the underexcited condition.
