Clunky Software to Post Comments?

01/31/2013 12:44 PM

Does anyone else become frustrated when writing comments at CR4, because when right clicking in the comment box one cannot copy or paste? One only gets a "Undo" "Redo" "Bypass custom menu" or "Close" as options. Continual red underlining constantly appears, but does not do anything. There is no spellchecker attached to these underlines.

I must be spoiled by other sites that have these added features--I like to rearrange blocks of text--which seems to be impossible at CR4 without using keyboard commands--and the "Preview" provides no editing capacity so one must go back and forth from preview and Edit mode to change any part of the structure of the comment. This problem with the "preview" being uneditable is resolved at many new websites, but exists at most websites.

I have a strange type of dyslexia, that seems to be age induced, where I will get characters mixed up in many words that I type. It started in my 50's with 3 letter words, but has progressed in my 60's so that much longer words will see letters appearing in the wrong places. This makes a spell-checker very important. Moving blocks of text is important when one is addressing more than one point in a post, and needs to move relevant information to another part of the comment.

I know that keyboard commands will 'cut', 'copy', and 'paste' --but I guess I didn't work in DOS long enough for these commands to become automatic to me, and may be kind of a "mouse boomer" because of this. I just find it easier to highlight and right click than to highlight and ctrl/x.

Please let me know your thoughts on this!

Thanks!

I copy and paste by left clicking, holding the left mouse button down and dragging the cursor over the text I want to copy, etc.

Right clicking does nothing.

Never been a problem for me.

You can move blocks of text by highlighting (with the mouse) then using drag'n'drop.

I can right click copy on my computer at work (Win XP Pro, IE 8), but my home machine doesn't (Win 7 Home Premium, IE 10), I must left click drag and drop. This only goes for the CR4 text box. I think it's a setting but have not really looked for it.

I find that what you see when you type is what you see when you preview.

What internet browsing program are you using as some didn't work as well as others for CR4 and I am not sure if that is still the case (my attempt at using Chrome was an unusable mess for me a few years ago).

Chrome may have improved with time - it's the only browser I know of on Android mobiles that has the formatting tools at the top of the edit box.

JoaT: I use Firefox 18.01

JohnDG: The drag and drop method works well--I rarely have used it but I will now.

JPool: I use XP Pro as well--funny that your machine, with IE8, will work with right-clk, but mine, with firefox 18, won't.

While I am replying to a post, that post is shown just above the comment message box, and I can <left-clk highlight/right-clk/left clk copy> text in the post to which I am replying, but not in the message box.

The right click menu (in the message box) is not static, however. In addressing you by name, I copied your names from the thread, but these names remained as actual links in my message. In right-clicking on them, I was given the object to edit or remove the link. I chose the latter.

I like universal methods of doing things on the computer--not having to rethink simple processes when I am trying to express myself. This would mean that the best (or perhaps, most user-friendly) software would lend itself to the biggest variety of methods for doing things, so that someone who had never used keyboard commands and only used a mouse could do that, while an old "Dosser" would be able to carry on with keyboard commands, as well.

I still remember the day, years ago, when I got an iPod 15Gig, and was so grateful for how the "touch sensitive selector ring" would morph into a volume control, once a selection was playing. The unit could sit on the passenger seat, and I could alter the volume without looking away from the road. For the time, it was a step forward in anticipating user actions.

The user friendliness of successful future devices is bound to be their main selling feature. I await the day when I can project a virtual screen on any available surface, use vocal inputs (without a huge training session to teach the computer my voice). and carry the whole thing in a shirt pocket (I don't like watches).

Thanks for the comments, everyone!

It could be improved, it is rather awkward at times, and frustrating....the right click undo redo custom menu thingy seems unnecessary, I have never used it, but have bypassed it many many many times....sizing font within a post is rather difficult, requires separate file....

Yep, it's clunky software all right, and perfectly appropriate for the forum, which has always seemed kind of DOS anyway.

It sounds like you are using Google Chrome as I am. Highlight your text, then use control-X to cut or control-C to copy, then control-V to paste. There is a spellchecker, it's the green check mark at the top.

For my part I find that popup a bit jarring in the sense that, for editing purposes, it does not behave in a way which has become the de facto standard for editors of all stripes; that is, one which offers the choices of Cut, Copy and Paste. I would much prefer that popup behave in the same manner that has become standard 'Net-wide. In its stead I use Ctrl-x to cut, Ctrl-c to copy and Ctrl-v to paste (and Ctrl-z to undo, even though Undo is present on that little popup. Just easier and it's right there).

Unfortunately Chrome sometimes - not always, but sometimes - overwrites these key combinations so that they have no effect. Chrome does it so thoroughly in fact that I must reset my computer to get the functionality back. Chrome can be very intrusive in this way, as well as in others.

For instance, quite often I'll close Chrome when I'm done with it. All well and good, but when I shut down my computer and later boot it back up, and then launch Chrome, it complains that it was previously not shut down correctly and would I like to restore my previously-open tabs? Oh? What gives? Well, I did click Quit, and so if clicking on Quit does not correctly shut down Chrome then would they possibly be kind enough to provide a Quit Correctly button in its stead?

Evidently Chrome continues running in the background even though I've closed the browser, and in spite of the fact that I have explicitly disabled the run-in-the-background feature in Chrome's Setup. Turns out this is why I occasionally hear a sound like the one you hear when someone enters or leaves a chat room. It's Chrome, running in the background, still connected to something which causes that sound snippet to be played. What site that may be - or even if it is a site at all but something else - is still a mystery because I seldom visit chat rooms. Maybe once or twice a year, if that.

Chrome has other drawbacks, the Biggie for me being that CR4's editor does not work properly under Chrome. Moreover, if Google had any sense at all, they would have hired Mark Gaulin as Chrome's chief support-forum architect. He did a great job designing this website, IMHO, in spite of its flaws (especially that popup, but neither is it a show-stopper and can easily be made standard). This site is light years better than the way Chrome's community forum is designed, and no mistake. Sweet Jesus what a mess that one is. You'd think Google couldn't afford better help! Here, we've got it good compared to what else is Out There. Just sayin'

To StandardsGuy; Thanks for the heads-up on the spellchecker (duh)--Funny I didn't notice it. What else could some text and a check mark be?

Thank God it's TGIF!
