If it is running slow change the cmos battery. Check the main battery.

Thanks for the hint. Most probably it is cmos battery because it runa slow even when pluged to the main. Does changing the cmos battery has any consequences like losing data etc...?

If you leave the battery out for very long, all the settings in the CMOS will revert to their defaults. You should run setup and write your settings down before you take the battery out, then run setup again after you have replaced the battery to see if any of the settings have changed. Sometimes the owner's manual or user guide will provide a mainboard diagram so that you can find the battery, and some manufacturers even provide helpful disassembly hints. It isn't uncommon to find this battery hemmed in with brackets and cables, so that it isn't immediately obvious how to get the thing out without destroying something else.

The only thing the cmos battery will do is keep the current date/time and the bios settings (ie: bios password, boot configuration...)

Usually with a dead/faulty cmos battery the first symptom would be that you have to reset the date and time every time you turn the computer on.

Changing the cmos battery probably will not affect your system. Chances are you are using default settings in the bios from the factory. So unless your computer had some advanced changes made within the bios, you should be fine. Although I do not believe this will solve your problem.

I have never seen this problem so I can't give you much advise on how to correct it. If the computer is running really slow, and I mean REALLY slow, it could be that the computer it having trouble redrawing the screen. You can tune up the computer to help this. Try and run a few utilities like scandisk, defrag, disk cleanup wizard. If this doesn't help much, you can try and uninstall some TSR programs. These programs run in the background of windows and usually have an icon on the taskbar's lower right corner near the clock. Antivirus software would be my first guess as a reason the cpu is being tied up. Check to see what percentage your cpu usage is from windows task manager. You can also see what programs are running and what % they're taking up in there.

As a final alternative to make the system run like it was when it was new, is to reformat the hard drive - use a system restore cd if you have one.

Hope this helps

John

I would also check to see how many applets are running -- many HP boxes have numerous application running, attempting to contact outside servers which cause apparent time "hangs" while waiting for responses -- do a CTRL>ALT>DEL and look at the processes tab -- If you don't recognize the applets running kill them one by one-(don't worry - they'll restart when you reboot your computer) This will give you an idea as to how much of your processor time is being dedicated to each applet. Bet you'll find one or more that monopolize processor time causing the stalllin updating the clock.

If the real time clock is just random within a few seconds, this is a likely explanation. If it is losing or gaining time over a period (it wasn't totally clear to me from the original description), it's probably down to the battery.
Please keep us posted with your progress.

I now read this as follows:
The time doesn't move for one second:
Then it moves correctly in each of the following four seconds
This then repeats, so the clock only advances four hours in every five.

Coupled with your original post, I'm supposing that sometimes the clock goes OK for a different number of seconds between stoppages.

SFIK, this is quite unusual - it sounds as if you have a combination of a marginal divider stage and a low battery - but correct diagnosis of an unusual fault is never guaranteed.
