You could probably get away with using Microsoft Excel... Create forms to update inventory, add/edit items, you can even password protect it with different usernames if you wanted to.

If price is a problem and Xcel will do what you want (fantastic program!!) then a cheaper alternative is Open Office from Sun. You can download the latest version for nothing or pay a small amount and they will send you a CD.

The link:- http://de.openoffice.org/

It is compatible to MS Office and/or you can save files in its own proprietry format.

Best of luck.

KART Digital (http://www.kartdigital.net) supplies a user configurable system to large and small law enforcement agencies that may be what you are looking for.

Cost is only $2995 for a complete barcode turnkey system with computer, barcode printer and scanner.

When I had my own company (custom circuit board design & manufacture) I developed my own inventory program useing DBase because I couldn't find anything that I could afford that would allow me to allocate parts and keep track og my WIP. If you have to be able to allocate inventory parts in kits for example, Excel may not be enough horsepower and you may need a relational database. Acess is an easy choice and has inventory models that come in the box. All you have to do is change the names and there you have it.
