Weight of Polyethylene Block

02/04/2013 6:43 PM

1.What would a solid block of Low density Polyethylene weigh if it were 3 Meters x 3 Meters x 5 Meters

2. Same size block but of Polypropilene.

A close estimate will be fine.

They float, barely.

I'd call it 1 gram/cc.

A gallon of water is 8#. 62.4# cu ft. Water is 1g/cc. Salt water is higher SG depending on the concentration, temperature...................never mind there I go...........

I've had my second beer and cannot add

0.855 g/cm3, amorphous

0.946 g/cm3, crystalline

From Wiki, you'll have to convert it.

OK, OK I was a little heavy at 1g/cc.

Last but not least, Why do you ask?

PE and PPRO can be foamed, I've done it.

Low density polyethylene 920kg/m³....LDPE is defined by a density range of 0.910-0.940 g/cm3

How about this. They will displace enough water to float, barely.

Thank you too Lyn. I am counting on it floating... but it may have to get hauled onboard a VERY large boat and I want to know how much weight to allow for the bridle and lift net.

thank you.

Think of it as a big block of ice.

Polypropylene will likely weigh about the same if it is unfilled, it could be easily 10% higher if there is a lot of filler in it- I use a 22% glass reinforced PPE that specs out at about 1.06 for the S.G. for example. If it's mostly residential waste it will likely be unfilled.

Even with a bit of filler the void spaces in the bale will probably be enough to make it float.

That is exactly what it will look like, only slightly longer on one side.

3 x 3 x 5 metric tonnes x 2200 lb/mt x 0.92 sp gr ≈ 91,100 lb.

Re: Weight of Polyethylene Block

.... oh it will take a decently large hull to manage all of this if the project goes through. Still a lot of discussion between everybody. i just want to get my facts straight before I start dropping numbers .

The gear I am designing would sift about 40 million gallons plus per hour and pick up most of the junk between 1cmx1cm and larger.

Still a long way to go. But it will give me something different to do this summer besides working on these fish sampling nets. I'm up to my scuppers with Asian carp and Paddle fish gear ... ha ha !

thank you all as usual............

Re: Weight of Polyethylene Block

Actually, I was asked about it.

A daunting task and probably an impossibility....

But yes, I have a net system that runs about 45-55 Million gallons an hour through a Sifter Trawl . it collects 1cm³ to 1Mtr.³ trash. It takes debris down to 10 feet under the surface only. The trash is deposited in 3-6 ton sacks or bags. They can be reused, stored onboard or left to 'float' until they can be collected like so many floating bundles.

It was origianlly set up for use to take spilled stuff from the water.

Its is portable and operates behind any boat in the 90' length size with at least 350 hp or so.

Probably way too much area to cover. It would take a fleet of trawlers to do any good.

However, i was asked.

* However, you know how the Panama canal was dug ????

One shovel full at a time. Ha Ha!!
