Vertical Canned Pumps Can Inspection

02/06/2013 6:58 AM

Dear Engineers,

we have lot of Vertical canned pumps in Cryogenic service pumping Ethane and Ethylene. One of the requirements of Insurance Audit is to inspect the Cans for Integrity, such as weld inspection, corrosion effects etc. Has any body done this? is it by removing the can itself or by sending a robotic UT scanner in to the can without removing the can as suggested by one of the Auditor? Please share the experience.

Be careful. Anything that affects the assembly or the integrity of the pump or its motor may consitute a breach of the principles contained in the ATEX Directive.

Best discuss it with the pumps' manufacturers first, unless the procedure is already contained in the instruction manual that came with each pump?

Thanks, We normally pull out such pumps for overhauls but never the cans. we can do a confined space for inspection of other vessels but not in pump cans due to narrow spacing. The company's in house safety policies does not allow use of Rope ladders to get in to the vessel. In such a scenario we are left out with only two options, either pull out the can or use some Robotic Scanners that can go in scan, record and then infer to get the result.

I am any way getting in touch with OEM for guidelines, but still looking for other's experience with this and to know who provides such an inspection service. Thanks once again for the advise.

Would it be practical to buy a complete spare for each size and then pull the entire installed pump, can and all, replace with the spare and then overhaul the pump and use it to replace the next one due and right on down the line? This is assuming that many of them would be of the same size, capacity, TDH and with equal Hp/KW drivers or at least the ability to utilize the same drive.
