Maybe you have to many programs running, and the thing is jut getting to darn hot.

Took the fan off one of mine once, and simply slapped it back on. I'm sure the experts will say to clean up and re-apply paste. The computer survived the abuse, but given that the entire motherboard had a good mm or so of dust covering it I doubt that little tinker made things much worse.

So, how fast did the compressed air get the blades spinning ? Any idea where the dust ended up ?

I'd check (with Task Manager) to see if you have unwanted programs running, then maybe invest in a new fan (they're tricky to clean if really encrusted). I used q-tips (the geeks will kill me ). Said computer still works fine after about 6 years of such barbarity.

Well now you've set me off, the crud on my fan is probably my own.Come to think of it, some small part of said crud may have even blown across the planet (bit like the air Aristotle breathed) and landed on everyones fans ! Seeing as how we're all made of stardust, don't expect compensation from me anytime soon - it's ET's fault.

Anybody got a cure for a squeaky hard drive ? I dissected one once, and much to my surprise it wasn't a sealed unit. Seems logical - take it to a different elevation and the thing would either swell up or get squashed. It had a tiny filter covering an air-hole. I've no idea what size of particle it filters, but I'd guess that cigarette laden breath can get into it. It survived washing under a hot tap, but I didn't think at the time to use some sort of nicotine solvent.

Holy Mother of Bog. You ran a hard drive under the tap? You've totally got to be sh*tting me!

Looks like you upset the dust's sensitive dynamic balancing on your CPU fan and now it's old rusty bearing is complaining. Putting the dust back might fix the problem, but then it might not. (LOL). Is there any noticeable play on the fan axle? If yes, get it replaced, lubrication-cleaning surgery will not always succeed. S.M.

If you, "didn't touched anything from the inside", how could you have, "(remove the fan)"?

Buy a new fan. It will have thermal grease with it.

That reminds me, it isn't too many months until we have the hell that is Wimbledon. I'll do a temporary hosue swap for the next fixture, just give ne some notice so I can tell the cat to move out for a few weeks. Harlow is closer than Etherville
