What's the Best Flavor of "Linux" For a Gaming PC

02/09/2013 1:07 PM

I recently want to build to a pc from scratch but I don't want to pay the "Heavy" price of Windows so I decide to stick with something free such as Ubuntu. But I don't think Ubuntu can handle to play Games such as Battlfield 3/Crysys 3,Dead Island (NO COD)... ETC.. Does anyone know a good "linux flavor" that could take advantage of my graphics cards,or the the Hardware...

It would have to be a competition between:

Berry.

and

Peppermint

.

unless of course you are planning to extract revenge on some Linux canine who bit you making your tastes run to the more exotic. Then you might prefer:

Coyote

or

Yellow Dog

.

The possibility exists that you will prefer none of these, in which case I might be forced to eat my Red Hat.

They are not modified programs / movies. You simply have to be willing to violate the copyright laws of the nation from which the content originates.

Some produce, others occupy.

I agree! I think this is akin to spreading a virus. Microsoft Windows is the worst malignancy you could install. They couldn't pay me to put it on my computers.

He had posted a link to torrents with the suggestion of downloading Windows XP. Just not the type of comment that is allowed to stay up for too long.

That's all right. It was up long enough to let the Genie is out of the bottle anyway.

100+ views before I saw it removed.

As far as torrentz downloading goes its sort of like open sea piracy.

It all comes down to what ship you are on. Arrrg.

No Linux operating system will play the games you have mentioned. This is because the programs were not designed to work on multiple platforms. If software was written to work on multiple platforms, people might choose to use free open-source operating systems instead of paying Microsoft. This is not acceptable. Ubuntu is based on Debian and they both will make use of your hardware, but you will stuck with a reliable and secure operating system, and only be able to play games ported for Linux or multiple platforms.

Unfortunately to be legal and to play the games you want, you have to buy a copy of windows. I would recommend Win 7 home premium, I bought it for my latest build and had to pay $100 USD

I would use Lubuntu. It has the LXDE Desktop which takes a lot of the load off and leaves most of the power available for the games. Underneath LXDE is the same Ubuntu base and so all your support, updates, and repos are still there.

Wine can still be installed and works fine with LXDE if you need a windows environment and PlayOnLinux is still available as well.

Have you tried installing them under wine? Most of the programs you refere to are reported working after reasonable tweeking on most linux distros, (though I can't confirm it.) I had success on programs I didn't expect to work, and supprisingly faster and more stable than in their native environment. That says a lot to me. The only programs that resist are ones with special protection schemes, those with direct hardware manipulation through propriatary drivers and those too deeply integrated with undocumented winblows libraries, but this last one makes them stupid and inefficient in the first place. S.M.

If it wasn't for Microsoft, even Apple wouldn't be around, or at least look very different. Windows changed the way games needed different Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files to run under DOS, and allowed them to run under windows with far less headaches for the installer. It also allowed different hardware to get along together better, such as sound cards and printers. Microsoft designed a very good operating system with Windows 7. Pay them for it. Linux has it's uses, but not for gaming.

I was enjoying my Apple II Plus long before I ever heard of Microsoft. Why would Apple not be around?

"with far less headaches for the installer" than what? Banging your head on the keyboard.

"get along together better"? This explains why my printer will only work with XP, and no other operating system in the world, including Windows 7. The landfills are overflowing with perfectly good proprietary hardware.

"Pay them for it"? You mean pay them for the limited right to use it.

"Linux has it's uses, but not for gaming." unless the game is ported for Linux. In which case it works great. Now that I think about it, Linux may be a more widely used platform for gaming than Microsoft.

I thought Lindows, or what ever you call it now, is supposed to be able to play about 85% of Windows gaming programs.

So i guess maybe WINE will work for most games....I heard that if I get the paid version" Crossover" I will get a bigger coverage for different software from windows, but I'm not really sure if it applies to Video Games...I don't really have very much experience with WINE that is why I'm asking if "WINE" or "Crossover " could have a advantage over each other when it comes down to hadeling software (any type) . Or maybe an advantage in hadeling games.
