Presentation Live Data Using Power Point and API Open7

02/11/2013 5:54 PM

Hello All, (two part question)

I currently use power point 2003, I can create a presentation and display it normally.

I also have a second software application, API open7 That I currently Run and display on a different computer/monitor. The API screen updates with graphical images from time to time.

I would like to know if it is possible to take the image from API and merge it into my power point AND have the power point show the real time image of API?

I can install power point and API on the same computer.

The end result I am looking for is to display the normal power point and have a slide to display the API data.

Should Power Point not be able to do what I need I would like suggestions on what software I could obtain to do so.

Hello folks,

Use Printkey (XP, 2000, etc...)from Alfred Bolliger (coolmen@bluewin.ch) Actually P2000 works only up to Win NT4.0, but I use it daily on win XP and with success on Win7. I guess it works on Win8 and future Win9. Once charged, it goes in the task bar and you have just to invoke it to take any type of screen picture. You may save in the most current type of files, included vectorial ones. So you can save under JPEG (*.jpg) and charge it into PPT (power Point) You can pick any type of screen including those of API_7. As saving may be vectorial, you may change all dimensions to fit your PPT parameters. That's what i do with my presentations on PPT.

It works and it is FREE.

What you're suggesting sounds like a screen capture, which is a function that is already built in to most current computers.

To capture a picture of your screen simply press the PRINT SCREEN button. The picture will be stored on your computer's clipboard, and then you can paste it into a document or an email or a presentation. You should also be able to capture only the active window if you desire. On my PC this is performed by pressing ALT + PRINT SCREEN. Even if your PC doesn't have a print screen button, it should still be able to perform a screen capture through some keyboard combination.

However, I thought that the original question was asking for real time images. PowerPoint isn't capable of presenting real time data. A ppt file has to be updated when it is opened. If linked data changes while that ppt file is open, it will not be updated on the open ppt file until the operator chooses to refresh the file.

If a static JPG or BMP file is good enough, then I would use a screen capture.

Thank you Paul, You are correct I need real time data or I need to be able to run and loop the presentation. At some point in the show I need to either capture a live screenshot and display it in the presentation or minimize the presentation to the live data can be displayed on screen then after a period of time maximize the presentation and continue.

These are images? Can they be saved to a format that can be exported to the other?

From MS Office Help:

Set up a program to open during a slide show You can set up your presentation to open any other program you have - for example, Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Word - during a slide show. 1. On the slide, select the text or object you want to use to open the program. 2. On the Slide Show menu, click Action Settings. 3. Do one of the following: • To open the program by clicking the selected object during the slide show, click the Mouse Click tab. • To open the program by moving the mouse pointer over the object, click the Mouse Over ta4. Click Run program, and then type the path for the program you want to open. If you don't know the path, click Select, locate the program, and then click O5. Select any other options you want, and then click OK. 6. To preview how your program will open during the slide show, click Slide Show at the lower left of the Microsoft PowerPoint window.

Embedding video is possible, and opening programs, but I am not aware of a plug-in to stream live programming into PPT. Perhaps record events prior to the presentation, and run an embedded video of what happened 30mins ago?

Is it possible to automatically capture a screen shot and embed it in to presentation say every 2 minutes? Keep in mind the the presentation loops continuously.

I expect so.... A quick Google came up with this which suggests it can do something like what you are looking for. It may need a Macro created within PPT ti point at the updated file, unless you can get the image software to rewrite the contents of the same file each time.
