Perhaps a review of Consumer Reports is in order. You hafta sign up to review the reports.

I am fortunate enough to live where such a device is not necessary, so I have nothing useful to add (this is not unusual, ask just about anybody). As far as opinions, you might ask Brita, PUR, or Aquasana what they think about Berkey and their products.

A very different grade of water treatment. Brita, Pur and Aquasana convert potable water into palatable water. This system will make most water potable. I have not used this system but I know of many charter fishing boats here that use this or a similar design to convert ocean water instead of hauling drinking water.

Grank here i asked this question because 1-you cannot buy this in California, because it is not certified and the company has not made any movement to change this and as far as as my research there is no tests available, the company always refer to tests done years ago and also it seems to good to be true.

There maybe a good reason this cannot be sold in California. As I said they claim to convert most water to potable water. Possibly some water sources in California cannot be made potable with this system. Possibly Berkey claims too much.

I have one as an emergency water supply system.

I dipped a gallon of water out of my pond and tested the unit when I first got it. It appears to work as advertised. There was no odor, no taste, and I am still here to write this review. I also ran a test where I mixed food coloring with the water; the end product was clear.

Nevertheless, if I have to actually rely on it during an emergency for lots of water, I also have a supply of bleach, which I will treat the end product with.

Edit: By the way, California has revised it's wording regarding this type of system/claim and now they can be shipped there.

Iowa has extremely expensive certifications to submit and Berkley has chosen not to pay these fees. They cannot be purchased there.

Berkley states that their filters conform to ANSI/NSF Standard 53. Call them and ask that the INDEPENDENT laboratory testing reports be sent to you. In this day and age of the www, anyone can claim anything. Always VERIFY before purchasing, especially if it's a large cash outlay!

Is this water filer to be installed as a whole-house water filter, or are you looking to buy a portable one for hiking etc etc? End use is very important.

If you're filtering a municipal-supplied water you will most likely be wasting your money. Municipal and private water purveyors must adhere to very stringent state and Federal water quality standards and their operators must be certified by the state Health Department having jurisdiction.

If you only want to remove chlorine because of it's taste then you are better served by installing a simple and inexpensive Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) inline filter for whole house use or just one installed at your kitchen sink.

Remember to check on filter replacement availability and costs before you purchase anything!!!!
