Shortest distance in a straight line (i.e. "as the crow flies"), rather than by road etc.

Calculating the distance means you ignore all obstacles and pretend the trip is made in a straight line. Calculate the distance without including stops or turns. Go from point A to point B with nothing in between. The crow fly distance is a very rough estimation of distance or length.

Dear Mr.golenboy gin,

It is the distance between 2 points or places joined by a straight line. It will be the shortest distance - rather than travelling by following the road. This is essential when some DISTANCE RESTRICTIONS are to be followed between the factories, places etc, etc.

Crow fly distance is an anology, since crow can fly straight, with out any obstruction. If we have to travel, we have to face obstruction.

My "thumb rule" for "crow fly distance" is as straight as you can make it.

The American translation would be "rule of thumb" and "as the Crow flies".

But the first is close enough to get the point across.

I believe that something has been lost in the translation.

The shortest distance between any two points, unencumbered by geographically imposed alterations of course defines "as the crow flies".

Could be between a factory and a seaport.

The value should be some unit of linear measurement. Two of these, "Å" would define a short distance. One of these, " light year" defines a long distance.

It is the distance along a straight line from one point to another point. You would have to pick a single point on a body of water, say a harbour, unless you were to calculate the center of the area of that body.

√(a2+b2) is frequently applicable. E.g., on city streets 4 blocks east plus 3 blocks north is 7 blocks. But a crow (or any bird) can fly the diagonal of 5 blocks.
