Chemical Analysis of Weld Metal

02/14/2013 3:51 AM

ASME Section IX QW-404.5 (Applicable only to ferrous metals.)

"(c) For GMAW and EGW-from the chemical analysis of the weld deposit prepared according to the filler metal specification or the manufacturer's or supplier's certificate of compliance when the shielding gas used was the same as that used to weld the procedure qualification test coupon."

"(d) For SAW-from the chemical analysis of the weld deposit prepared according to the filler metal specification or the manufacturer's or supplier's certificate of compliance when the flux used was the same as that used to weld the procedure qualification test coupon. In lieu of an A-Number designation, the nominal chemical composition of the weld deposit shall be indicated on the WPS and on the PQR. Designation of nominal chemical composition may also be by reference to the AWS classification, except for the "G" suffix classification, the manufacturer's trade designation, or other established procurement documents."

A s per this clauses, Can I accept the result taken from Arcmet-8000 optical emission spectrometer (spark type PMI equipment) as chemical analysis? The result contain all the elements including carbon as per corresponding SFA number in ASME Sec II Part C requirement. Or should I follow other method for Chemical analysis? If,so pls give the details of the test to be conducted.

Thanks,

San

Yes,it is acceptable. PMI based on OES technique is a type of chemical analysis. However, client requirement is final. If client has no specific requirement on type of test to find the analysis of different elements, then you can follow any type of tests to find the chemical composition of the base metal and weld metal. More information you can find from ASME SA-751 Specification for Test Methods,Practices and Terminology for Chemical Analysis of Steel Products.
