Display Format Data of PLC

02/19/2013 12:49 PM

I have plc allen bradly micro830, and I want to display format data of plc on led message display dimension 150x50 cm. Can anyone help me to find a supplier of this type of led message display or if there is software or hardware to display the data on TV screen?

Taha ziad,

Lets see if I understand your question--

  • You have data, probably numbers, that you want to display on the LED message display device.
  • If not on an LED device, then on a TV screen or monitor.
  • You don't have the LED device, but want to choose one that will do this job with this PLC processor. Then you can purchase it.
  • You want to know what hardware (such as cables, etc.) and software you need to allow the PLC's data to be transmitted to the display.

Assuming this is correct, I can add a few general comments, but cannot give you an exact answer. I am unfamiliar with the micro830, but have used a number of other AB PLC's and program them quite often.

  • If you are wanting to display data from a register in the PLC, then the display device needs to be able to communicate with the PLC in a language that the PLC uses. For AB this is typically DH485 or DH+, which are protocols owned by AB.
  • The data will probably be coming over a serial communications link, so the speed, parity, number of data and stop bits, etc. must all be set the same.
  • If you cannot find a display that will talk with the AB PLC, then you may have to look at buying and setting-up a serial converter that can translate the data from one protocol to another as well as do this with each port communicating with different settings.
  • If you are using a TV, then this is a whole different problem, far beyond my experience.
  • If you are wanting to display a text message, with its contents controlled by the PLC, this can also be done on many multi-line display units.

Search on-line for "Operator Interfaces" for PLC's, and then sort the results by size, embedded protocols, etc. This should give you a few good choices.

Try the Rockwell Automation, aka Allen-Bradley, web site. They typically show the directly compatible A-B display devices with the PLC data. You may already have the required programming SW. The website is a pain to use but once you figure that out you should be able to find what you need.

In the US we also have Automation Direct, which usually has compatible devices for lower cost with the programming SW usually free. That could take more effort to get to work though. The other post covers the non A-B avenue pretty well.

BTW - I'm not a programmer, but I used to have to specify this type of hardware.

I would also try Red Lion. They have HMI interfaces and larger displays (LED dot style and TV monitors) that talk to all the major brands/models of PLCs. And reasonably priced too.
