A davit as noted by Lyn is the only place I have seen it used, but never in a tank. Did you mean on or over a tank? It could be used over a tank for hoisting the contents of the tank. That type is known as a "J" davit because it resembles the letter J when turned upside down. When not used for hoisting boats, a davit can be used to lift loads as found in industrial settings. They are used on very large machine tools to lift and move heavy items, like lathe chucks and raw stock for machining.

Might as well do it all:

OP simple net searches can save you a lot of time↓

Pipe DavitsCranes

The Pipe Davit is pedestal-mounted with a ram cylinder luffing boom of box construction.

Operations

  • The davit is designed for pipe handling on all types of vessels operating under offshore conditions.
  • It performs external lifts over the side of the vessel and internal lifts on the deck of the vessel.

Hi all,

I have nothing to add to the specific conversation. What I do have is knowledge of international sensorship. I work for a very large multinational so we have offices in almost every country. what we discover is there are amazingly insane levels of internet sensorship in other countries. yes we immediately think of China, but thats nothing compared to the sensorship they extend to all their satelite "territories' Then we have places like N. Korea, pakistan, and all those other whatever 'stans ex soviet well the list is long and illustrious and all have varying degrees of sensorship. In some countries you cannot even use Google. Period. Forget Wiki also or Youtube and so they end up asking what seem like really dumb/simple questions that we assume they should have been able to answer easily. We forget how blessed we are to live in a free country here in America. Please be kind guys, they may not have access to the same resourses we have. They also may not be able to get back on this site once their coutries sensors see that they came here. There's alot of radical and dangerous ideas floating around here that despots, dictators and the like are really afraid of. Remember, knowledge is power.

Climbing off my soap box.....

The most common use for a pipe davit in a steel tank is to support a blind flange for bolting connection to a body flange, or manway flange. The davit is usually a 90 degree pipe bend of a schedule heavy enough to support the blind for personnel safety and for the swinging out, or in, of the blind. The davit is normally welded to a swivel connection on top center of the body, or manway, flange and connected via a chain, or eye bolt, to top dead center of the blind flange. The blind flange may then be swung away from the flange for entry, or toward the flange for bolt-up.

Originally, I responded with whether it was located "IN" the tank or "ON" the tank. Your response implies that the davit must be located outside the tank. It may sound like nitpicking, but there is a big difference between "IN" and "ON".
