Level switch selection for oil+water service

05/28/2007 12:46 AM

Dear all

Is anybody aware of special type of level switchs? We are having heavy oil-more viscous+water, in a pit, which we use to discharge to final effluent facilities. There is interface below which we need to stop the pump to avoid oil pumping. We are intending to operate the pump on auto mode based on Low and High level by switch functioning. One old type switch was not feasible in which the float used to get stuck with oil & foreigh matter and giving unreliable operation. One proposal is to use Radar type switch.

If any body has past experience and knowledge about reliable switche, please reply

Thanks for yoru help

Recently I have installed a self designed level sensor for underground water tank,

The main thing is this that what is the speciality of ur oil like is it inflamable or Immflamable,

You may contact me personnely on my gmail account that is <i.sanjai@gmail.com>

Because of your special case, wherein you are dealing with two kinds of fluid in a vessel (heavy slurry + oil), and the way I understand it....you need to pump-out the slurry and not the oil on top, I suggest you should not use level switches for this case. USE CAPACITANCE PROBE or the one we called Interface Probes. Because you are dealing with two kinds of fluid material, you can utilize the difference in their densities to handle them properly....and this types of probes/sensors helps.

Try Endress+Hauser products. They have both capacitance probes and liquiphant level limit switces.

In fact its not slurry at the Bottom. Its water at the bottom and oil on th etop as usual by gravity difference. But whenever the sensor is dipped, the top layer of oil coats/covers/stickes to the sensor/float or mechanism, and disabling its action. Hence I think what suggested by you can be good. By the way, can you please refer any specific contact or reference?

Thanks

One possibility is to mount an acoustic (or laser) distance meter looking down at the surface of your liquid. Connect a controller to the distance meter output so that you can program the controler to start or stop according to the liquid level.

Hi Sasodekar,

Why not remove the oil off the top on an ongoing bases and then you will not need ...A mop skimmer is used to do this all the time on the mines.

send me an email and i will send you the details flegelo@gmail.com

best

Radar or guided radar are good candidates.

You should request a trial installation from the likely instrument vendors.

There are many factors that could interfere with good readings.

Pay special attention to turbulence present when effluent is flowing into or our of the tank.

Shail--

If you were using a low-grade or low-quality mechanical float switch, I suggest you look at a good industrial-grade mechanical float switch. The float typically is a hollow stainless steel sphere with a rod extending up from it. Lengths of rod can be added on to get the float to the approximate level needed for your application. At the top, one adds weights to the rod or counter-balancing weights to adjust the float so it is floating in the interface between the oil and water. Guides may be added as necessary to keep it straight. The switch is actuated by rings on the rod above and below the switch lever (with the rod able to slide through a slotted hole in the lever). Depending on your application the switch and its housing can be specified for nearly any type of industrial environment. In the USA, a reliable manufacturer is Square-D; I'm sure that a suitable one is available to you, regardless of your location.

As long as you can keep the fouling to a reasonable level, perhaps by a scheduled preventive maintenance plan, this should give you a fairly low-tech approach.

Regards--John M.
