How To Select EDG Size

02/28/2013 1:32 PM

How to select EDG proper size to supply a critical load of 1200 KW 480 V 60 HZ 3 ph considering motors starting up to 200 KW and aceptable voltage drop during starting of lager motor not more thant 15% and not furure load included.

Essentially I need to know the overrate machine to be considered respect to the running load.

Bye

Hire a competent electrical engineer!

This is nothing for someone with no knowledge of electricity to play around with.

Hire a competent electrical engineer, and give them sufficient information to work with.

1. Make a list of all your loads, motors, etc.

2. Get all the data possible for each of them,

3. Decide which ones are critical loads,

4. Use one of these software packages,

5. Run multiple cases,

6. Run an economic analysis of the cost of downtime, failure to start, etc.

7. Decide how much of your client's(?) money that you want to waste.

8. Then prepare a bid specification for your potential vendors,

9. Evaluate the bids.

Or follow Lyn's suggestion and hire some expert assistance to do all of the above (and more) correctly, you might find the cost and subsequent advice well worth the aggravation of explaining why you over or under specified the DG package that you chose without expert advice.

1200kW is an awful lot of power for pumping lager around. That's a collossus of a brewery...

Well, 1200 Kw is not so an owtul lot of power for a 1800 MT/day Fertilizer plant when quite a few pumps are consider as critical load that has to restart on total main power blackout to guarantee safety and success shutdown.

Well,

I'd think that a "1800 MT/day Fertilizer plant" would have a competent electrical engineer on staff, or be willing to hire a consultant for these jobs.

Yes of course there are a lot of them and with more than 40 years experience but I would like to hear some different opinion from colleagues, in some cases the emergency load represent 8 to 10% of the total installed load. also now with softstart systems may be some change criterias and so on.

Thanks Lyn

With all due respect, I don't know if an anonymous forum is a good place to get a continuing education.

There are some expert electrical guys here, maybe they'll help you.

Good Luck.
