Small Auto Stamping Machine

03/11/2013 8:20 PM

Hi All.

Can anyone help, or point me in the direction please, to a small desk top auto press?

I have googled and searched for weeks to no effect and are rapidly coming to the conclusion one would have to be made for me. (any takers?)

It is to die cut 300gm card into irregualar shapes. In singles size 148mm x 105mm (A6) the tonnage would not be too great. Guessed at >5 ton max? But I would like it automatic please. (fed up with using a hand pump)

Put the card into the press, auto click, pull it out die cut. Put the next card in...click etc. stamping approx. every 1-5 seconds. Yes, ideally the blanks would be auto-fed into the press, but that would be luxury! (I'd get idle-itis) At this time, just hand fed would be fast enough, as long as it stamped down quickly.

The best way to describe what am looking for is: a desktop automatic clicker press.
Something the size of the old railway ticket punch machines only with a bit more tonnage. Feed the card in - click - cut - pull it out - fed the next card in....etc.

Anyone know of such a machine? Or, could anyone make one for me please?
I don't need (or want) to buy a massive umpteen ton Hare or clicker press; when I only need a small (desktop) size "ticket punch style" machine that clicks at say >5 ton max. every few seconds?

Can anyone help please? Many thanks.

jt.

Thank you for the effort Solareagle, sorry, no cigar.

Some desktop (!) is required to accommodate pic. 1. Pic. 2 is a heat transfer press (unless I'm mistaken) and they do not have the tonnage. Pic.3. Toy town and more my size, but they do not press creases (emboss) (or so I was told, only make intermittent small cuts.) also slower than I would like. But thank you for the reply Solareagle.

We use a small punch press by Benchmaster that could work for you. We have it on a rolling table instead of a desk, desk would have to be real heavy-duty. We use it for punching and forming on several different parts. Maybe you could find something like this. We have also used it with steel-rule dies in a manner you are looking at.

Yes, that one is on the right lines, thank you.

Google "pneumatic press" There are a number of presses on the market, either toggle or direct acting. One make that I have used in the past is Joraco. They have a number of bench top models in the force range you are looking for.

This assumes that you have compressed air available.

Now I have a little more time to reply in more depth. I have designed and built many small press units for your type of application. Sorry, but I am retired and cannot build one for you now. However, I think that I can get you going toward finding what you are looking for.

First, forget mechanical presses. A mechanical press in the size that you are looking for, even if you could find one, does not work well with a steel rule die. You would soon discover this the first (and probably the last) time you got the press stuck on bottom.

That leaves pneumatic or hydraulic power, or an air over hydraulic hybrid. What is your budget, and what machining services do you have available? And, most important, where are you located?

If pneumatic or other types of presses are not the right answer for your needs, maybe a kick press is.

Hi Gringogreg, Thank you for your reply. In the UK.

(Unfortunately as there is far more choice in the USA)

Re. hydraulic and pneumatic both have draw backs, and the necessity of a compressor. But, I need to find something. Magic wand anyone?.

I visualise an automatic stamping machine the size of a large typewriter (fits on desk)
which "snaps" down onto the inserted card die cutting and creasing it. Not impossible?

Hi Harley, Not sure what a kicking press is? Clicker press? Toggle press?

I might start a new job in Seoul next week. It could be a good Korea move.

If you google "kick press" many images come up for kick presses. They are mechanical devices powered by your foot.

A fly press would certainly do the job. I don't know of any "automatic" fly presses though.

Very uncommon tool here in North America, yet amazingly useful one!

Here is a company which sells used ones. How hard would it be to work up a pneumatic foot pedal?

Yusef,

I have not seen a Fly press for nearly 60 years when I used one regularly learning my workshop skills as an apprentice!

A blast from th epast.

Thank You!

I like them. They are much more powerful than, say, an Arbour Press. The arbour press would be an arm which swings down, (like a drill press) but it can only put out so much power. A really long arm would defeat the OP's specification of simple and low effort. A fly press merely swings swings a handle sideways. I have even seen them rigged up with a kick pedal. They are VERY powerful...you can coin with these things!

I am not quite sure how powerful the OP needs a press to be...do you suppose a simple drill press, not plugged in, would be suitable? I have seen them go for a few cents at auction when their motors are blown.

Try Tox-Pressotechnic, or Schmidt bench top models. They make air/oil and pneumatic presses in the range you are looking for. You could run it with a small shop compressor if you keep the stroke short to keep the flow requirement down. They can supply a full kit including the proper safety switches, ready to mount your tooling.

Expect to spend a few thousand euro or more for a new one. Maybe you can find a used one. Look at their web sites for what you want then shop used equipment sites.

After reading these suggestions, and doing my own search, I conclude that a pneumatic toggle press is your best option. In fact they are ideal for steel rule dies as they generate most of their force in the last millimeters of stroke and their shut height can be precisely controlled. From your description I estimate that your die will require about 6 tons force (based on 300 lbs force per inch of rule for card stock)

Your problem is lack of compressed air. It may be possible to replace the air cylinder with an electric actuator. However the cost of the actuator and the electronics to control it will be much more than a small compressor like the type contractors use for their air tools.

As for brands:

Joraco as I previously mentioned. I believe they are available in the UK

RMT is made in England. I have used two of these in your type of application, and used ones are plentiful at reasonable prices. However they are fairly heavy. Not exactly "desk top" more like a sturdy bench. They are easy to automate with a small PLC.

Schmidt toggle press top quality machines avoid the direct acting ones though they need a lot of air. Available in the UK but not cheap as has been suggested try looking for a 2nd hand one.
